Possibility of sub-forums for the Highlander section
It was suggested in a thread recently that sub-forums ought to be added to the Highlander forums. I had mentioned that every time this has been tried it's been full of problems. Okay, the latest on this is that we're experimenting again with sub-forums in the Corolla section, and based on whether this latest effort is successful or not will determine whether sub-forums will be added here. I have to admit the Highlander forums have been around long enough and have generated enough postings that sub-forums might be a worthy effort.
What I'd like you all to do is chime in on this thread with your ideas or opinions regarding Highlander sub-forums, and a lot hinges on your participation in this process. Again, adding sub-forums is not guaranteed at this point, but depending on the response to this thread will help determine whether they're worth adding or not. Thanks!

hey TD, I took a look at the corolla section to try and figure out what you mean by sub-forum. Are you talking about like splitting car generations or like general topic subforums (like audio, questions, technical, that highlander classified that lasted like a week (lol), etc...)??

Yes. Off the top of my head it could be broken up into sub-forums like Towing, AWD Drivetrain and Performance, Wheels and Tires, General Discussion, etc.

I just joined the forum last night, and I think a sub-forum is a good idea. I belong to another forum for Subaru Foresters, and that's how they have the site set up, which makes it neat and organized. The fun part is trying to figure out what topic areas you want on the list.
By the way, this is a great site. I'm glad I was able to find you guys.
I don't think this is a good idea for the 2nd gen Highlander forum. Right now I log in once or twice a day and there are around 5, maybe 10 threads with new content. It's not hard to keep up with and easy to search for Highlander related info with the single forum. If the forum was more active multiple subforums would make sense.
Basically I think it would add alot of hassle to browse to multiple subforums to see what is going on.
One subforum I still think would be useful is a Buy/Sell/trade subforum dedicated to our cars. I know a previous attempt at something like this failed and the logistics/politics of having classifieds outside the classifieds section is complicated. The single thread in the previous attempt was not very visible and that probably contributed to it not working. A subforum for selling would probably get minimal traffic but at least that stuff would reach it's target audience.
Definetly a good idea. I just joined as well and I found the one big forum too big! I was using nissanmurano.org before. You may want to look at their layout as well. Love the forum either way though

I rather like it the way it is.. and would echo 9volt. In my opinion, sub forums would require a lot of work by the administrators moving a lot of posts to their respective sections.. which would frustrate the original poster and subsequent posters.

x3. I don't contribute too much in the HL forums unlike the 2nd Gen Tacoma, but I've been around long enough to know what seems to work and what doesn't. I don't even like having a Tacoma Lounge because I almost never take the time to go there (and why post there when no one else goes there either?). I like to go to one place and see it all at a glance without investing too much time. Even more so now that I visit a lot on my ipod. And the AutoGuide App is a negative 10 in my book. Sure wish TN had a free (or even paid) app that worked as well as the free one on TW...

Shoot me a PM with your observations about the app, and I'll pass them along to the appropriate folks at AG.

I dont have an opinion on subforums, but I'm actually very surprised there is no "Highlander Nomads" or "Highlander Fans" or "Highlander Freaks" independent forum like Piloteers, MDXers, OdyClub for Honda Trucks/Vans.
I dont know the history behind TN, as this is my first Toyota, but it seems too broad in scope since Toyota has so many products.
Also regarding mobile apps, is it possible to use an app like Forum runner to access the Highlander Sub forums (including HHY)?
I vote for No, we don't need to fragment this small forum any more than necessary. I think we should be able to 'vote' for helpful/informative threads that could be added as a sticky to the top and you could have various categories, i.e. audio, suspension, engine, etc.

For selfish reasons I would prefer not having sub-forums. I have been in these forums from very early on, so there is not much I need to keep up with when I pop in every couple of days. However, for new members I can see how the forums would look overwhelming. With that said, I think that it would be in TN's best interest to create sub forums so new members can find what they are looking for. Making several sub-sections would be nice I guess. I hope it isn't to carved up though. Ii like the sticky Idea that JMsin suggested.

Based on all factors I can say there will not be any sub-forums. Your idea about amending the sticky section is the way to go, but one thing I want to prevent is the sticky section growing into a huge monster like it did in the Tacoma section years ago. If you're talking having the various categories added to an additional sticky thread to compliment the DIY stickies I could totally go for that.
As for people being able to "vote" for threads, I've always welcomed you all to PM me with suggestions for inclusion in the sticky threads....that's been a permanent policy....
