Spare tire cover 2012 Highlander?

I am looking for a spare tire cover for under my 2012 HL. It sits pretty close to the exhaust in two areas so it would either have to be plastic of fireproof vinyl. Any ideas or has anybody covered theirs.

My recommendation would be keep your wheel waxed and wax every time you rotate tires. Include the spare in the rotation. I had a chrome rim rust after years mounted as a spare. It is also good to lubricate the cable every time you rotate tires. forget about a cover.

+1

I think a cover would trap moisture, and would be worse for the tire/rim.

I agree that any sort of cover under there would be a bad idea. Frankly I haven't ever heard of anybody covering a spare.

I agree with beck's on this one. I think it would promote rust.

No place to rust. Alloy rim on full size spare with TPMS. Will rotate out every 5000 miles with oil change. Just looking for a way to keep it in good condition and cut down on wind drag.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Wouldn't Toyota have put a cover there already if it would increase fuel economy? I'm sure they would do everything they could to promote better mileage in Highlanders.

Just don't mount it with the face of the wheel pointing towards the road. Ours was mounted that way and got beat to hell.

I'm actually considering making a 17.5" disc to cover the wheel that is exposed to the road. Maybe black plastic about a 1/4 inch thick. Just thinking.

I agree with the others, I wouldn't do anything to cover it.

It's some tough love, but at least we won't ever be accused of sugar-coating our opinions....
