2012 Limited NAV SLOOOW to respond to typing

This is my 4th Toyota with Factory Nav, so I know its capabilities and limitations (I know, I am a glutton for punishment! ) And I thought I knew what to expect in regards to performance.

This 2012 Limited is 3 weeks old, and when we try to enter a name of a destination, (ex: Safeway)...it is painfully slow to allow the next letter to be entered. "S"......wait.. wait...wait....then the keyboard changes to the allowable next letters, and I am able enter one more letter. "A" Then wait.... wait.... wait... again...It is extremely painful....

When it finaly displays the Safeways it has found, and we select one, by pressing "OK"...At first it appears that it didn't do anything....wait...wait... wait....Press OK again...ARGH! This isn't right!

We are currently traveling across country, and have changed the zone search area as necessary. I took it to a Toyota dealer away from home today. They were nice enough to look at while I waited, but reported it as "functioning normally". We don't agree.

I KNOW this is way slower than the '09 Venza I traded in, and the '09 Camry Hybrid my wife drives.

I have removed and re-inserted the Nav disc thinking maybe the system just needs to be rebooted, but that didn't do anything. Not sure how to reboot it anyway!

Any ideas?

Thanks!

We have a 2012 HL Limited and experiencing the same "issue", I posted this in another thread and someone replied stating its a DVD navigation and its normal IIRC.

Thanks for the reply! I am comparing the "delay" with three other Toyota Nav systems we have owned/still own. This one just seems VERY slow compared to the others. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, we are traveling, and can't compare side by side with wife's '09 Camry Hybrid. Maybe I will try to find some time and ask a dealer if I can compare mine with another new HL Limited they have in stock.

Mine is slow, but its not THAT slow. Is the nav dvd scratched or dirty? I would take it to the dealer since its probably still under warranty since you have a 2012... a full reboot (that you mentioned in the first post) would mean to completely disconnect the power for awhile. Next time you turn it on, it will reload everything from the disc, but I not sure if that would fix anything

It is pretty bad. I've just learned to deal with the rats running behind the unit powering it along. There's only so fast they can go.

If we had the same issue on our phones we'd be screaming bloody murder. But the Nav has some issues.

Update

I think I have found the reason for the poor keyboard performance. My 90 day trial to XM radio ended this week, and my GPS is back to normal. It appears that the traffic portion of XM was causing the extreme delays in keyboard response.

Some background, my last car, 2009 Venza, also had the GPS and the XM radio trial. When the trial ended, I subscribed to the music, but didn't get the traffic subscription. I rarely used the GPS on that car during the XM trial, as we were basically at home during the time. Since buying the Highlander, we have been traveling, and using (or trying to use) the GPS frequently.

During my attempts to rectify the slowness, one of the things I tried was turning off the traffic notifications, with no noticiable improvement, but now with the XM "not authorized" the GPS seems to be working as I expect.

I still wish entries could be entered while the vehicle is in motion by the passenger, but that is a different issue.

Ill confirm with Jbollt, after my Sirius XM radio and traffic trial was over the Navigation was quicker in response times.
