steering adjustment ?'s

I adjusted the steering box on my 4runner today, and was wondering if it is bad for the steering box to be adjusted too closely. the specs that I'm going by says that it needs to be less than 1.18 inches of play in the steering wheel. is it bad for the steering box to try to adjust the steering tighter than that?

I've heard different answers from "No, as long as it's not binding up on turns" to "Yes, it puts additional strain on the bearings inside the box which causes it to prematurely wear out." As long as you have at least 1/2-inch play or more, I wouldn't worry about it.
