Unusual High Idle Speed..engine stays at high rpms...

I was driving home last night (engine all warmed up)...cruising at 30mph, 2K rpms. I was coming up to a stop, so I put the clutch in and took it out of gear to coast up to the stop. The weird part was that the engine stayed up at the 2K rpms. I didn't touch the gas at all, and came to a full stop, where the engine was still at that high rpm. I sat for a second to see if it would go down, but never did. So I tapped the gas and then the rpms went back down to normal (the rpms went down much slower than usual).

I didn't know what to think, especially since the engine was fully warm (even though it shouldn't do that when the engine is cold). I tried to make it do the same thing, and it happened everytime I tried to do it.

That was last night...I haven't drove it today to see if it still does it. I am going to investigate it further to see if I can find anything, and check the computer to see if it throws any codes...

I just thought I would throw this problem out there to see if anyone can help. I will post anything I come up with after I check it out.

I don't think it is anything mechanical...as far as the throttle cable, etc...but I will check that out for sure.

You need to clean your throttle body. Your throttle plate is sticking, and thats why your rpms hung up.

I did have my throttle body off less than 6 months ago and cleaned it all (I had it off to fix/adjust the TPS)....and even before I had it off and cleaned, I didn't have this problem. I drove it yesterday during the day and didn't notice anything, but when I drove it last night, it started to do this.

I will certainly take a look at the throttle body though....

Thanks for the response.

This happened to me when my dashpot started sticking (that brass looking valve that slowly brings the throttle to the rest position) I just squirted the hell out of the plunger with silicone spray and so far it hasn't given me any issues.

check your motor mounts too and your trottle cable near the firewall... it might be sticking when torqued over or tugging at the firewall

Hey, does outside temperature have anything to to do with the phenomenon?

Could still be the tps; I had to do mine a couple of times before it was finally good. As for that little dashpot under the throttle stop, take the screw right off so it's disconnected. It just holds the revs from coming down, and isn't even connected to anything.
