my 85 efi 22rec 188000miles, is ticking, at 1600 and 1800 rpms, and sometimes when turning, i was thinking it was the timing chain, but im not sure. then i was told it could be a sticky lifter. any ideas, or fixes..CAN I TIGHTEN THE CHAIN TENSIONER, WITHOUT REBUILDING THE TIMING CHAIN???
i here a thumping, and it can be felt when in the passenger seat. only when i turn right! its confusing as hell!!!!.
thanks.

anyone got any ideas, i changed my oil, and it wasnt foamy . i tried to seafoam it to free the sticky lifter but it didnt work. But the part that gets me is that the ticking is not constant or in a pattern. I think the thumping is from the steering stabilizer? anyone have this happen before? I just replaced it, but i think the boot is getting hung up on the leaf spring, but this is on the driver's side. There is no loose steering components, the tire is not rubing, or bouncing. I am LOST!!!!

The ticking is usually causes by a busted/broken timing chain guide
even off beat like that. ? the kit is only 49 at advanced auto parts, how long does it take to replace? i have about every hand tool possible, two manuals for my truck, but ive never done it before. can i do it in on a sunday or saturday?
Id play it safe and at least check the timing chain. If you blow the chain you WILL ruin your motor (the pistons will hit the valves).
Cap'n
I would definately check it too, but if it does break it doesnt neccesairly mean a ruined motor. Mine broke and busted the timing cover (You dont want that to happen $249 for just the cover) It did cause a slight ticking of the valves though
EITHER WAY, I would say you could do it fairly quick, at worse go ahead and spend the $49 and couple of hours. Could you do it on a sat, or sun yeah..
You can tell if it is a timing chain it will actually do it really loud when you first start it up, and it will have a "chee chee chee" sound
As for the feeling on the passenger seat when your turning that sounds like something else, when i had my 4x4 and turned to the right it would pop and you could feel it.. Never did figure out what that was..

RE's don't have lifters. The tensioner isn't adjustable; oil pressure tightens it against the chain. You should change the whole timing set, which takes about 4 hours if you're mechanically inclined. Be sure to remove the 8mm bolt under the distributor gear otherwise you'll crack the cover when you try to remove it. Use a small dab of RTV in the corners where the cover meets the head gasket and at the bottom corners where the cover meets the oil pan.
anyone got a good idea on a rear squeaking noise when im under 10mph? i have recent brakes in the rear and front, but it doesnt even squeak when i brake, its only when im starting from a stop, and it stopped for a while after i pressure washed the rear, but it caqme back. is could it be fluid or more like something loose?
u joints in these trucks squeak like that, hav ehad it happen twice now
check them
the ticking in the engine is probably chain and guides yep,
mine was ticking alot noisy for over a year that ive had it and then early last month it finally lost a guide, busted it
at 133k miles
so id be pulling timing cover the way it sounds
good luck
