Quite of few people have had really good luck with a purolator pure one oil filter. I'm going try this filter next and compare it to the Napa gold 1515 that I'm currently running. So far the napa gold surpasses the crappy orange-can-of-death fram filters. But is that any surprise?
Yeah, Napa gold filters are good, along with Wix, Purolator PureOne & Mobil 1. If you prefer to stick with OEM filters then I would suggest getting them online from trdparts4u.com. Bought many things from them with no hassle, great prices and fantastic customer service.
Most NAPA filters are Wix (by Dana), an excellent choice. STP, Bosch and Mobil filters at Autozone are made by Champion Labs, all highly rated. Just stay away from the orange ones.
its all i could find locally other than fram, or napa
thanks

OK, I have heard this disdain for the "orange" filters before but I don't know why,
does anyone have firsthand or reliable evidence that they are really that crappy?
I used to go with bigger name brands for a lot of parts, but now I tend to think that for things such as filters they are pretty much the same; a filter is a very simple piece of equipment. Although I have seen some filters which were not reliable, these were usually very cheap ones that were sold in bulk to shops that changed oil. The majority of filters that you can get at Walmart or any parts store are fine.
I definitely came to that decision about oil after reading a study by Consumer Reports a couple years ago; they found that oil is oil as long as it was API certified, doesn't matter if its Valvoline, Pennzoil, Texaco, or Pep Boy's generic.
Interestingly, Consumer Reports also did an indepth study about length between oil changes; they found the 3000 mile thing is baloney, you're not going to experience any accelerated wear on your engine until you push your oil change out to 12,000 miles, even with hard city driving. I will point out though that this was for street driving, if you are offroading I would change the oil much more frequently, maybe even less than 3000 miles.
I have even seen a lot of Toyota manuals that recommend 7500 miles.
Bosch is a Champ Labs filter. STP, AC Delco, and Walmart's SuperTech are all Champ Labs filters, and very good.
Purolator is made by ArvinMeritor, who also makes Motorcraft, Valvoline and PepBoys Proline, all very good as well.
There are several problems with the orange ones. Cut one open and see for yourself.
The anti-drainback valve design is so poor that they often "leak down" overnight, delaying oil pressure at every cold start. Since Toyota mounts the filter sideways instead of upright, like on a Chevy.
Internal construction is glue and cardboard instead of crimped metal. Maybe ok, but sure looks cheap and do you want to trust it?
Brand for brand, Fram has the smallest amount of filtering media in the can for a given application. Honeywell makes Fram as well Pennzoil filters for JiffyLube.
I agree that any API rated oil will protect your engine when changed at recommended intervals, there are few industry standards for filters. The API SM oil standards are so tight that any brand can be considered excellent, especially compared to just a few years ago. So good is the newer refining and chemistry, that any advantage for synthetic has disappeared, except at arctic temperatures.
ive seen to much bad in person, engines and vehicles ive had that were run with this junk oil and filters
not good.,,
good luck
thanks

Pennzoil itself is now a top product. Royal Dutch Shell purchased Pennzoil and QuakerState recently. They use Group II+ hydroprocessed base oils and moly in the additive package.

Id go down to the local auto parts store and get a Wix.
Ive used Fram filters in the past before I knew better (back when I was 16), but I have since learned that Fram uses less filtering paper than other brands.

I think there's a Fram on mine now, I'll change the oil and put an STP on that I have, I'll cut open the Fram like you suggested; what exactly is the purpose of an antidrain back valve?
does it keep oil in the filter after you shut off the engine?
btw, what does "ttt" mean?
I also heard bad talk about Pennzoil oil from a mechanic a few years ago, he said it was a "parrafin" type oil.
This seems very dubious to me, isn't parrafin like candle wax or something?

An anti drainback valve keeps the oil from flowing out of the filter which means that when you start the engine it takes less time for the oil to flow up to the valvetrain (because it doesnt have to refill the filter every time you start the engine).
