I have seen where guys put a Celica engine in a truck, are there any differences between an EFI 22r out of a truck and one out of the Celica? or are they the same thing?
The 22R was never EFI. I think you are referring to the 22R-E.
If you are talking about the 22R (carbed 2.4L SOHC), yes, that engine was also used in the Celicas in the '80s.
A friend of mine had an '89 Celica that was rear-drive and had the 22R. That was a fun little car.

In North America the 22R & 22R-E s are used in the following:
22R
1981-82 Toyota Corona
1981-87 Toyota pickup (up to 1990 on 2wd)
1984-87 Toyota 4-Runner
22R-E
1985-95 Toyota pickup
1985-95 Toyota 4-Runner
1983-85 Celica
These are 22R Series tech data sites which show that the 22R-E's used in the 83-85 Celicas had only 96 HP where as the ones used in the trucks had 116 HP:

Huh! Thats weird. My friend's Celica had a 22R in it. I know this because the valvecover said "22R" on it and because it had the flat disc style aircleaner that you see on carburated engines.
Weird...

my information came from a parts catalog I was looking at recently, it showed 85 pickup as having a 22R-TEC and the Celica as having a 22R-EC.
I don't recall, but I guess its possible that the Celica was also offered with the 22R as the truck was; but I don't think so for that year anyway. I was just wondering if the fuel injected 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engines were the same in the car as the truck.
Thats interesting that there is such a big difference between the horsepower ratings of the 22R on the Celica as opposed to the truck, perhaps they detuned it on the car because its smaller/lighter ?
What the "c" designation with those engines? Ive heard or a 22R-TE (turbocharged 2.4L) and a 22R-E, but never 22R-TEC and 22R-EC.
California emission's 22R-E it has an extra charcoal canister and handfull of other emission parts which the basic 22R-E does not have.

Id just like to have an oldschool Celica...PERIOD. That car my friend had wasnt too fast in a straight line but man was it fun in the twisties (5-speed manual and rear-wheel drive).
Its just a shame that he got a newer Malibu and decided to destroy the Celica. He took it into the woods behind his house and was ramming trees with it, jumping ditches and had his own little rollover contest with it. He finally destroyed it by putting a brick on the gas pedal while in neutral to see how long it could run at redline before the motor blew.
It was a crying shame I tell ya. Now, he's having all sorts of problems with the Malibu. I guess thats karma for ya!

The 22R-E in the Celica had I think larger intake or exhaust ports along with different shaped ones therefore the engine had less HP but when they introduced it for the 4-Runner/trucks they decided to upgrade it,again see the 22R tech data sites that I provided.
