it seems like everybody always wants to get the bigger engine; like if people are looking at a small car they thumb their nose at a 4cyl and simply must have the V6, if they are looking at a truck they just gotta have the biggest V8 as opposed to a V6.
My big question is: why?
Sure, I can see it if you are always towing around a monstrous fifth wheel, but I look at the stats on most any fairly average small sporty sedan ( especially Japanese ), and they get more power from a small V6 today than they got from a Corvette in 1985.
The FI 4cylinders they have today have plenty of power, unless you have to constantly drive around your morbidly obese family or something
The bigger and more complex an engine, the more expensive it is to maintain, and fuel costs will pale in comparison to maintenance costs.
a couple years ago I did the fuel pump on my 22R; the part cost $27 and took me ten minutes to replace, have you ever done a fuel pump on a modern FI vehicle where they put the pump in the tank? NIGHTMARE! I have done a few Chevy pickup fuel pumps, the part will run $400 dollars or so and will take an experienced mechanic at least half a day, and the pump will invariably fail with 30 gallons in the tank. Every drop of that gas will have to come out if you want to replace the pump, and they don't make it easy to drain them.
As for your choice for a small Toyota pickup, I don't think I would choose a 3.0 V6 over the 22RE, even if you have a need for more power, like if you haul or tow a lot or do serious offroading, I don't think the V6 even has a lot more power ( maybe more torque ) thank the 22RE. I might consider it if I was sure that I had taken care of headgasket problems with aftermarket headbolts or gasket or head modifications? Even headgasket aside, I don't think the V6 has the reliability and longevity of the 22's.
I would just stick with the 22RE, there are plenty of aftermarket goodies to soup it up; injectors, cam, headers, nitrous, etc..
