4x2 VS 4x4

Hey guys i was in a market for a truck, I was looking thru ebay with a budget of $7000 for a decent truck with a club cab.

Anyways, I dont really understand the meaning of 4x2. I'm assume its a 2wd system (RWD) with a option of putting it in part-time 4wd. Am i right on this. As compared to a 4x4 which is running 4wd all the time. Would you have a option of running just the 2wd system on the 4x4.

I was looking at some Tacomas and some Dodge Dakota's they looked really nice and stuff but i just never understood what it is. Everyone calls it a diffrent name and system. So if someone could give me a break down of what everything is.

What is the system called where you have the option of running 2H, 2L, 4L ?

2WD(4X2) is strictly rear wheel drive. 4WD(4X4) is required, for what you are looking for.

here's my $0.02 worth of knowledge:
4x2 = dual wheels (2 wheels left side & 2 wheels right side at the rear) Rear wheel drive only.
4x4 = drivetrain system that allows you to deliver power to rear wheels only [2H] or divide power to front and back [4H] flat slippery conditions: or [4L] for uphill or towing or deep mud.
Only select 4L or 4H when necessary, driving on dry/wet roads in 4H/4L does not improve handling and can damage your drivetrain.
Consider why you want 4x4, snow/mud tires and ballast will keep you out of trouble 90% of the time. (98.7% of statistics are made up on the spot )

The 4x2 sends power only to the rear wheels, whereas the 4x4 gives you the option of also sending power to the front wheels.
The only Toyotas that have full time 4x4 are the LandCruiser, RAV4, Matrix (when equipped with AWD) and the All-Trac Corollas and Celicas.
I think the 4x2 you are referring to is the PreRunner. The PreRunner has all the looks of a 4x4 but it isnt a 4x4. Its basically made for people who like the looks and taller ride height of a 4x4 but who dont drive off-road or in snow enough to need a 4x4.

2x4 is a 2 wheel drive, most often driving the rear wheels in a truck, i have seen a front wheel drive.
4x4 is 2 wheel drive for the most part but you can engage the front wheels when needed
AWD is all the time 4x4.
