i had a 22RE 4 cylinder 2wd single cab toyota p/u with a 5 speed. i raced my friends dodge ram a couple of times and hung with him until about 50, then he pulled ahead and away from me. the 0-60 time in a dodge ram like his was 9.2 seconds so im guessing for MINE about 9.8 or so. on the NEW tacomas, with a 2.4 liter and 5 speed would probably be 8.0 to 8.5 ish i would think(considering the relevant horsepower and torque gains). i dunno if this helped or not, but theres my 2 cents worth

Thanks for input, Trent. Glad to see a toyota hanging with a RAM.
My 2.4RE 5 speed does 0-50 mph in 6.65 seconds. I need to try that 0-60 mph time.
I'm not certain if the newer Tacoma's are quicker. They weigh a bit more than our pre-1995 trucks...but I know they have more HP and TORQUE. I really need to head down to the dealership and drive one again just to compare.

Trent, how are you achieving an estimated 9.8 seconds to 60? Is it your launch? I know the truck is so hard to get a decent launch without bog or excessive wheelspin.
Also, how is your shifting...under throttle or letting off between gears...?
You sparked my curiousity.

well it was most likely a combo of launch/shifting probs... i am 16 so i have alot to learn on the art of the 5 spd. when i shifted it went sort of like this... let all the way off accelerator, push clutch immediatly after that, shift to next gear, give a little bit of gas, then release the clutch. thats prolly way off, but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time lol. i sold the truck about 6 months ago though, so i no longer race my buddies. i try real hard not to flogg on my 4x4 22RE truck lol

ahhhh, that explains it. 16 yrs old...haha! Well, after you get some years experience under your belt, you'll figure out that you leave the accelerator petal floored between gears. If you do it right, you will shift really fast and get a huge power jump between the gears....also the tach won't jump over redline. It's definitely an art....and takes some practice. You don't want to miss a shift when the accelerator is still floored. YIKES.
The most important aspect in a race is the launch. The trucks are a bit tricky to launch because there is little weight in the bed of the truck. Drop the clutch too high and you have excess wheelspin....and drop too low and it bogs. Another art to master. Well, you have some years to practice.

Yes, keep it FLOORED between the gears. Personally, I only do it from 1st to 2nd. 2nd to 3rd on the trucks is sometimes difficult to do really quick because the shifter is so damn tall. I missed a shift on 2nd to 3rd on my old Jeep. Redline was at 5000rpm, hit 5500 rpm. Not good.
DOUBLE CLUTCHING: that's a bunch of monkey poop from Fast & the Furious. Don't listen to the guys that are preaching that junk. It's B/S and they are probably still riding their 10 speed bikes or driving mom's automatic Volvo stationwagon.
Double clutching is used on those semi trucks and really old ass cars. Why you ask??...it is done because of their trannies...they don't have syncromesh gears. They can't shift gears like we can..if they do, they grind them. All passenger vehicles have syncromesh gears for many years now...longer than we have both been alive.
How do you doubleclutch??? >>> shift the tranny to 1st. Let out the clutch/apply throttle. Before you shift to second, shift to neutral, let out the clutch completely and then push back in the clutch (don't forget you are still in neutral) and shift to second gear. Let out the clutch and apply throttle. Takes a long time, right? Why in the hell would anyone do this in a passenger vehicle. BETTER YET, why would someone do this while racing? See what I mean by monkey poop?

LOL thanks for clearin that up for me... now i know what else to make fun of when my 'buddies' talk the crap they always do "my cars faster then yours" "yeah well i know how to double clutch so you can lick my ballz." None of my friends really know what double clutching is, but they all think its good when racing lol... theres news for them. and i see what your sayin about the way you double clutch... my dad has a 3 spd model A and he has to double clutch that... i just didnt know it was called "double clutchin" thanks for the info

I have a '99 reg cab tacoma 5-speed and I G-teched it at one time. 0-60 in 8.15 sec. from what I remember. I could probably get it in the 7's with a better launch. It bogged a little and there was no tire spin whatsoever.
Just think what it could do with a TRD S/C and decent tires.

Not bad time at all. What are you waiting for? Get a S/C, limited slip rear end, and some slicks. Then tell us that you hang with Mustang GT's....

If I could afford it I would definitely consider putting more money into my truck. But right now I actually have 2 vehicles and can't really afford to keep both.
It would be a great project though. It wouldn't take much to make it perform like a mustang. S/C, nice suspension, rims and tires, some lightweighting and adjustment of weight distribution, LSD, exhaust. If only I had the money.
