Carburetor Questions

I have an 84 reg cab 4X4 that I recently replaced the 22R motor in. Until a few weeks ago she was running fine, but now she won't idle worth a darn and almost dies at stop lights. Recently it started smoking while ideling, black smoke, and when I fueled up last my milage has dropped to 15. Any ideas on what may be causing this?

My plan is to replace the carb. It has had automatic choke problems since I bought it. Any preference on make and model of replacement carb? I was thinking Weber model 32/36.

Has anyone changed their carb? How difficult was it? Are the instructions included with the new one pretty good or do I need to plan on more research on the internet?

Thanks in advance for the info

Carbys are precision instruments that work best when they are not tampered with unnecessarily. When they work they work and when they don't you will know. In fact I have found that 9 out of 10 times problems with missing and poor running (or not running at all) are caused by electrical problems concerned with the ignition. In your case the problem would seem to be a stuck auto-choke (if it has one). Otherwise perhaps your manual choke is stuck. It could also be the idle jet that is clogged.

In other words, unless you realy believe that your carby is over the hill, I shouldn't think the problem merits a new carby. Rather I would assume that you have a minor problem that can be fixed without much hassle.

Changing the carby is not problematic at all. If you are not that familiar just be sure to keep good track of what you pull off where. I have in situations like these found it useful to take a picture of the item I am about to remove with a phone or digital camera (well, you can use any camera) the whole way round it before I start removing things.

When fitting the new carby be careful not to overtighten the nuts/bots holding the carby in place as this may bend the carby seat and make it prone to leakage, which will give you other problems such as rough idling, backfiring and a few others..
