questioning lifting my truck

yesturday, i was talking with a family friend who has been working on cars and trucks for the past like 50 years of his life. i was talking about putting on a block lift on my 93 toyota and he said he could deffinitly do it with me. but then he said that if i were to buy 4 hockey pucks, drill a hole in the middle of each one, and put them in, they would do the same as the 130 dollar kit i would have to buy.... so do i save money and do it redneck style.... or do i sacrafice my money.....

So are you doing a body lift, or blocks between the axle and the springs? If you are lifting the body only, you'll need about 16 pucks. DON'T put pucks betweent the axle and springs, if that is what he is suggesting, use steel instead, or best of all, save your money and buy a suspension lift kit.

you should get a suspension lift, my bro got torsion bars and new leaves from downey for 500 bucks shipped and it came out good, 2 inches total lift. if you xreally wanna use lift blocks you can, but it's like half-assin it in my opinion.

I installed a 3 inch body lift on my truck and yes.. all it does is simply lift the body off the frame.. So hockey pucks would work.. And its not really half assing.. it just makes it so you put on bigger tires and have a taller look.. True supension lifts are much better they raise the axle and entire truck..you dont have to worry about ground wires being pulled or fuel lines/ power steering lines being pulled... or extenting the steering colunm.. but they are about 3 times as much as well...

The moral of the store is yes you can redneck the job but you are gonna have to custom build a few parts, find the right screws and nuts.. And to me it is worth it to spend 130 to have a somewhat custom kit with all the bumper brackets steering extentions, firewall plate covers ect that you will find that you need... but good luck.. whats 130$????
