The sensor regulates the amount of oxygen in the exhaust to tell the computer (yes there are computers in the carb equipt motors) to richen or lean out the mixture depending on the variables (and there are many). The sensor is located on the exhaust manifold, at least on the EFI models anyway.
When the sensor goes bad (the sensor usually gets “lazy”) they tend to make the motor run too rich, thus expelling more hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO).
Get the sensor (make sure you get the Denso brand) from sparkplugs.com. They’ll cost around $35 vs. the dealer who will charge you $100+
