Pretty cool feature on the euro Hilux model

i was on the Toyota.de site looking at the hilux. I have always wondered how the some of these vehicles complies w/ the german lighting laws. Especially how the rear needs to have a a rear fog light for adverse condition.

Some cars in the days gone by had add on red lamps that would be switched on. Now they're integrated into the one of the tailight. So the rear has only ONE reverse light (right side) and the driver's side has the rear fog light where the reverse light would be

I'd like to do this subtle yet functional mod to our taco

it's already hard enough to see out the back of my truck at night when i'm backing up. take away one of my reverse lights and you might as well blind fold me and tell me not to run over the school children in front of my house

Wasn't Mercedes doing this on some of there SUV's a while ago. And I'm talking the US versions. Left tailight was super bright and the right was normal. They looked dumb as hell like one brake light was either burnt out or the other was stuck on.

Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Volvo and Audi do this, not to mention alot of other European Autos. It is so when you are traveling at 100 MPH on the highway and a Lambo comes up behind you doing 160 he can see you alot better and identify which lane your car is in. Alot of the European Manufacturers left this feature on some of the North American Models.

it's a really good safety feature actually, and that's why i want to use something similar to this but w/ an LED element.

another cool european safety feature that I LOVE when i owned euro cars, are the "split zone" convex mirrors. the outer 1/3 of the mirror is convex and the inner 2/3 is normal. HOT because it covers your blind spot nicely without that ugly a$$

it takes some getting used to at first but once u get used to it, it becomes a vital part of your driving. Plus the cops cant hide in your blind spot cuz u can see them

I've seen a few Hilux' in person. I really like them from a mechanical standpoint. Stronger frame, diesel engine, and manual shift transfer case, but they sure are ugly! I have considered looking for a totalled hilux and yanking the engine and drivetrain. The only thing we have that they don't is a locking rear diff, but the hilux runs the 8.4" and ARB
makes aftermarket lockers for those.

you're the member that i was looking for! You're my german euro connection! did you ship your taco over to germany for your tour? Because i dont think they sell the taco's over there right?

Anyway, just curious if/or how you get a waiver for some of the car regulations like the rear fog lights and side fender blinkers.

No, they won't ever come to the U.S. Unfortunately the American peoples seem to prefer to purchase pickups designed for picking up groceries. Here is an interesting article highlighting the evolution of the two seperate truck lines. Not too up to date, but very informative. http://www.brian894x4.com/Hiluxdifferences.html

I purchased my Tacoma through a military only program Toyota has set up over here. I sent in my request in July of '05 and picked up my truck at Bremerhaven off the boat in September of '05. Peeled the plastic off, poured in some gas and hit the Autobahn to find out where the governor was. That was 30,000 miles ago, and 50% of those are over 100MPH. I wheel a lot too, but you have to get there somehow. Being a G.I. I don't have to mess with Euro laws at all. I can run open headers with flamethrowers and the Polezei (cops) can't do squat. It's kind of cool, but they still pull me over a lot just to look at the truck. Bastards.

Yeah the foglights are pretty important here. Just because visibility is 20 feet Germans don't slow down at all. When it is foggy there are some really horrible wrecks here. I saw one that was over 50 cars long over a bridge, all mashed up. I heard on the radio later that the last guy to wreck in the line was 15 minutes AFTER the first wreck. I just tap my brakes when I see the glow of headlights coming at me from behind, but I am not really concerned about it because the cars are so small here that getting rear ended isn't going to hurt me much. My bumper is already getting mangled from rocks, what do I care if someone smashes their porsche into it?
