3vze replace or rebuild?

I have a 1990 4 runner (3vze) 233,00 great truck for the last 8 years. This truck has been everwhere, which leads to my problem. It currently runs on 5 cyl. It has to be valve related or ring related. I have been driving it for the last 6 months this way. I am considering openning it up and fixing the problem, but wonder if I am just going to trow away my money on old engine. If I do replace it should I rebuild it, replace it? Jap engine or remanufactored. Anyone who has had similar instances and good offer some advice would be much appreaciated.

Thats a good engine I think you shold rebuild it. And while your at it put after market headers and you won't get a problem again.
Used manufacture parts, but first check engine wear.
