22r 6speed

I can't get a straight answer from any of my research, so I wanted to know if anyone knew if the late 80's tercel that had 6speeds were compatible with the 22r motor. or maybe the later model supra trannys.. I don't mind making the bell housing, but will the splines mate? does anyone know the gear ratios in the 5 speed turbo tranny? I have a four speed and I love it to death, but my gasmileage is suffering and I want a closer gear ratio for eating people up, haha.

As far as I am aware there was never a 6spd offered in the Tercel. Late model Supras and I believe some Lexus models had the Getrag 6spd. These will not bolt to a 22R but if you have the capability to make a bell housing then the clutch fitment should also not be an issue. If you want specifics on toyota transmission ratios go to the Toysport webpage.

I swapped in a celica-supra W58 (?pretty sure that's the #) into my '85 2wd, with great results. The 5th gear ratio is way higher than the truck tranny, dropping the rpm in 5th gear by almost 500rpm. The transmission is also strong and bolts right up to your 22R.
I'm sure that no other engine series bolts up to the "R" engines, and anything for the tercel wouldn't take big power anyway.

If your truck is equipped with a "W" series transmission then you should be able to swapped the bellhousing to any other "W" series transmission. This will allow you to use several different transmissions out of other vehicles to get a more preferred ratio selection.
