Timing chain

I found the info I needed to ask questions for on a search before I joined the forum, but now their gone.

Anyway, my little truck needs a new timing chain. A few questions:
It clanks, bad, and I'm wondering how much time I have left before it busts. I have only owned the truck for about a week, but when I bought it I do not recall the noise. So I'm guessing the guides just now broke? How long do you think I got till the chain goes?

2.Do I have to remove the head to get to the chain??

3. Anybody ever done this before with yahoo messenger?? So when things go wrong I can easily get answers?

4.Know anything about the timing chains from engbldr.com? (I think thats right) Their 70 bucks cheaper than toyota wants and they have a steel chain.

5. How good is the Haynes manual in this?

6. Last but not least, Anybody want to help???

I wish you craploads of luck! Let me know how it goes! That would be a good winter project for me.
I'm planning on buying my timing chain kit from www.engnbldr.com. They have two different kits , one for 52.00 and one for 64.00. I'm going to get the one for 64 because its a Heavy duty steelrail kit. If and when I do it again , I'll probably just get one from the toyota dealership. They want 142 for a kit, and I would get it now, but I cant afford it. That website was awesome and should be next weekend I get this evil clanking fixed. Thats IF the timing chain doesnt break between now and then. Let's pray..... I do have to drive this truck to work every day

got my valves from engine builder today and put them in!
Now I am waiting for the cam I ordered and the Header and I can get this thing done! hows yours going pickup girl?

if the guide and the gears are ok u just knock a pin out of the old chain and attatch one end of the new one to it and turn over the engine and feed the new one through and put the pin in and go with it!!

i would advise not skimping on parts replacement when changing timing gear chain. i dont know what parts where quoted on your parts cost from toyota but it cost me $270. I have a mechanic friend that bought them at his cost. i replaced the chain,both gears,tensioner,both guides, oil pump seal etc.it took all day but i saved $250 by doing it myself. the cheapest i could find from a reputable shop that i even knew the owners at was $250..good luck and if you plan on keeping the truck id use the toyota parts or spend another $300 for labor plus parts later down the road..

make sure you pull the oil pan or u can bend the front of the lip if your good. you dont have to pull the head, just make sure you put enough sealant on the top where the head meets. i just replaced mine yesterday and it wasnt that bad, id do it again ..

hehe i havent been on here in forever...
couple notes on that swap
it took me 1 week to do (work full time and started on a monday, doh) i did remove the oil pan because of all the guide rail parts that got into the pan and when i replaced it i used a gasket and gasket sealer and it has seamed to work fine for the past 6 months..
secondly i did not remove the head just the timing chain cover and replaced parts from there being very careful not to hurt that gasket putting plenty of gasket sealer (rtv black) on it

the only problem that i had was when i put it back together the timing was waaaaayyyy off. causing lots of problems taht could have been avoided (never wanted to start, hesitated ALOT, hated first through third gear ext ext) even though the marks lined up on the crank pully and the distributor (or whatever) said they were right, it was really waaaaayyyy to retarted.. forgot why..

my only problem now is this adjusting of the valves.. grrrr

you might have bent a valve because when the piston comes up a valve could have opened

i dunno, i sure as hell hope not... or that would be alot of work for me to find a new one
the valves were fine after the swap until just about a month ago this one started really quiet ticking and then just got al ittle louder with time..
so i adjusted them according to the chiltons and haynes and that resulted in all of my valves going crazy
went to yotasomething.com and they said .007 and .011 for the valves.. tried it and it quieted all of them down but one.. and i think that is because i didnt tighten a nut down.. or i reamed on the truck immediatly after i did the valves
probably on thursday i'll break it down again and try to figure out the problem with this evil valve.. but dont scare me with a hurt valve.. i already have blown up one engine by throwing a piston through the side of block.. dont let me mess up engine number two..
