4 runner trans temps.

Posting for a friend, 1990 4 runner, V6, auto trans.170K, Having problems with the trans temp light comming on. This occurs when pushing 70-75 mph, and will occur on a 70 degree day, Pull over and let idle in park for a few and it cools down. Trans works fine, fluid looks new still. Friend says the shifter feels hotter than normal when this occurs. Previous owner added a extra trans cooler, musta been happening before, It is not used for towing. Is this common? the sun visor has data reguarding this, pull over etc, do the sensors typically go bad?? any suggestions will be greatly appricated.

Does the tranny cooler get air to it? Or is it mounted up in some dead air space? If so, then it isn't doing any good. You might want to wire up a small fan (like a computer fan) that blows on the tranny cooler so that he can flip it on when he gets up to 70mph or so.

Other than that I'd look at those sensors.

4 runner trans temp

The aftermarket cooler was mounted to the skidplate on top of the holes in it. fine set up it is. personally I would trash it, I dont feel it needs it if there are no problems with the vehicle itsself. It is a tube type low budget, double pass. The engine has no cooling issues and all the factory trans cooler lines are there with the cooler in front of the radiator.
Thanks for the replys!!

That's not normal. Before I added an aux tranny cooler to mine, the only time my light would come on is under extreme conditions like at pismo or going uphill, fully loaded in 105deg weather. You might want to flush the tranny (a real flush, not a drain and fill) if the tranny isn't spitting out chunks, and replace the radiator. Is the aux tranny cooler in series with the radiator? Is it plumbed inline with the return line?
