'91 truck..new owner...general questions...help!

Hi!

I just got a 1991 Toyota truck....it's in great shape...only 95,000 miles! Not alot of maintenence has been done on this truck...I'm thinking it definately needs the timing belt/water pump job ASAP! (I've blown an engine before...OUCH!)

Anyways...this thing is a V6....but it's not peppy at all! It runs nice, idles smoothly, accelerates up steep hills, but when I start out from a stop, it just doesn't GO like a v6 SHOULD go...it feels like a 4 cylinder, but I'm pretty darn certain that it's firing in all cylinders...

Do ya think maybe it just needs a basic tune-up? Or is a truck geared lower than, say, a car? I mean, I don't expect this thing to perform like a formula engine, but it does sort of run like a "grandpa mobile"...hmmm

On a different note...I may need to make a separate post for this....but...the rear bumper is totally fried...rusted out...although the rest of the car has barely any rust at all! I'm thinking of getting a junk yard bumper...does anyone know if any other 1991 Toyotas have the same bumper? (like the 4 runner etc) The bumper on this thing is a big, chrome, step bumper...tow hitch under it...

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the V6 is a dog, but it'll get you where you want to go.

Check out the FAQ section of my website. www.robinhood4x4.com

The 4runner rear bumpers won't fit on the truck. You'll have to find one from a 89-95 truck (not the tacoma). You can also get a tube bumper from places like smittybuilt.

I use to own a 93 v6 too, had about 3-4 inches on it with 33x12.5's it was one of the smoothest trucks i've ever driven, because of the engine idle. i've even sometimes start it twice because it was so quiet, i'll have to look at the rpm to see if the truck is runnning because you can barely hear it, unllike demostic trucks. that truck was so strong its not good for driving on wet roads or rainy days because i can peel without flooring it on first gear. thats why i flip it on a rainy day, i've should of known better. well enjoy your truck.

I wouldnt say the 3.0L was a dog, but it certainly wanst a hotrod either. If you are running the stock tire size (most likely P235s) it will be OK but if it has 31s it will take off a little bit slow.
The others were right about the V6's smoothness. That engine is downright silky. I had a '91 4Runner SR5 V6 and at idle you couldnt tell if the engine was running without glancing down at the tach.
