Question 99 Tocoma

I have a pinging noise coming from my engine when I accellerate. I thought it might be the fuel filter, spark plugs, or even the thermstate but I changed all of those and the noise is still there. I have a 2.7L 4cly. and only 43k miles on the truck. The pinging has been present for about the past 4 months. Does anyone have any ideals about what might be causing it?

The only thing I can think of is..... where's your warranty? I don't know a whole lot about Toyota pickups yet but I would think a 99 Tacoma would have at least a 7 year warranty. If you have one, just let them take car of it.

Take it to the dealer!

I think you are experiencing "knocking". That isn't right, so take it to the dealer for service! It will eventually damage your engine if not corrected.

You could right a book on octane ratings for gasoline, but (as defined in the Bosch Automotive Handbook... generally the rating defines the gasoline's anti-knock quality (resistance to pre-ignition). The higher the octane rating, the greater the resistance to engine knock.

Bottom line, your engine should not be experiencing these problems if you are running fuel with the Toyota recommended octane rating.

pinging

The sound isn't knocking. I have heard alot of engines in bad shape and this sound is a pinging nosing. I don't have a rod knocking or anything like that. I was woundering if maybe if my exhast manafold was leaking could it cause that kind of sound? Does anyone know?

Try letting the truck idol and do the following: take a wooden dowl and put one end to your ear and the other end against the engine and move it around until you can determine exactly where the sound is coming from. It's not an exact science, but it will help you determine if it's coming from the engine block or from the exhuast, etc.

Pinging or Knocking in the Head will most likely be detination. Common causes are as edgeman said poor fuel, or timing. I agree with the others on taking it to the dealer, if you still have it covered, if not find a good shop to figure out why its pinging. Good Luck

pinging

I don't know if this helps (it probably wont) but my 93 22RE has a 'pinging' sound (thats the only way I can describe it) right at about 2000 rpms. I have had everything done to try to pin it down and noone can figure out what it is. The list of probable causes (each proven wrong) went as such:

1. exhaust doughnut gasket
2. exhaust manifold
3. bad plugs
4. bad wires, cap and rotor
5. pin hole in exhaust manifold

all of these were proven to be wrong

now my mechanic thinks its a valve or piston that is mistimed or some shit.

I think I need a new mechanic. Anyone know of a good one in the Dayton, OH area?
