i think the only way to tell is to pull the wire and check it out. i imagine it goes from the speedo to the tranny so it should be relatively easy to get at. if it spins at the same time on both ends it's good.

I had this same noisy speedo problem with my truck. My truck is a '89 Pickup SR5 V6. The noise lasted two to four years and only came on when it was freezing cold. Also when the noise came on, sometimes the speedo would go crazy. When the speedo finally died, I pulled off the gauge cluster and drove the vehicle to test if the cable was still turning. I believe there is suppose to be grease where the cable connects to the speedo but I guess the grease failed since all there was there was a black, tacky molasses looking like substance on where the two connect. The cable was still turning when I drove so my problem should be the speedo. I was told by someone else who had the same exact problem that I had, he replaced the speedo and it was working again. I just barely ordered a new speedo today.

Donno what it is called, but there is a section within the dash between the cable and the dash that could be the problem.

I have an extra Cable just in case.

I know from past experience they like to go out about 300K
but so far I have 402K and still original cable.

It started real loud from before (when new) when it gets cold at about 200-300K and got much louder after 400K and even does it when warm although not as loud. I'll rpelace it soon I guess, just because...

They don't last for-ever!
