Hey all I have an 88 Pickup 4x4 with the 22RE. Just recently bought it and there are several things I noticed.
Somethings its hard to put into gear, usually only 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Its like I go to put it into first and I have to push hard and then it goes. Somethings it goes in smooth but most of the time it wants to fight alittle bit, doesn't do it in 4th or 5th.
If I go to put it in Reverse, about half the time it'll grind, even with the clutch all the way and at a complete stop.
Now I'm not sure really about how 4x4 works and everything, still new at all this but I noticed that I'll get out, lock the hubs, and it goes into H4 just fine and works fine. If I go to put it into L4 it seems to go in OK but when I go to drive and stick it in first, the truck goes no where, just revs up in all gears and doesn't move an inch.
Please give me some ideas on what to do, if I need to have it rebuilt or replaced or change fluid or what, I dont know but its getting to be a pain in the butt. Thanks in advance.
How many miles are on the engine, clutch, and tranny? Sounds like it could be a syncro problem but sounds more like many a clutch problem. If you have to "press it hard" (refering to the clutch, right?) to get it into gear, try adjusting the clutch cable so it will engage earlier and you won't have to press so hard. I JUST got into Toyota pickups so I don't know much about them at all, but you should be able to solve it by just asking around. Good luck,

190K on everything, everything is original to my knowledge. Its not really the clutch the I have to press hard, its the shifter. I start to put it into first and it wont move up so I have to put some pressure on it to get it to move.
This may or may not help, but try draining the tranny oil, and refilling with synthetic transmission oil. I think I put Mobil 1 gear oil in my transmision and diff, and they work great.
Your transmission should still be running strong at 190, so try the easy stuff first. If that doesn't work, look for a worn or damaged shift linkage.
I have a different set of questions. As I have an 81 4x4 I have a little knowledge of that subject.
Let's start off with, does it have a body lift?
A body lift raises the hole in the floor the shifter fits through thus limiting the travel.
When the shifter is in gear, does it move around easily or is it firmly in a spot? There's a plastic bushing on the end of your shifter that wears out making the shifter require more travel room.
When in 4WD low, does it make any noises when you put it in 1st and release the clutch?
Fill me in on the answers to those and I'll give ya my suggestion.

Ok, just went and tested everything here's the answers to those.
1. Yes, it has a 3" lift.
2. Yes, when it is in gear I can wiggle the shifter side to side, its not rigid in place.
3. When placing the truck in L4 it makes no noise. I release the truck and try to go forward and nothing happens, its like its in neutral. Strangly though, when I go to take it OUT of gear, it pulls down alittle bit, then I hear a grinding noise for a split second. Doesn't do it whenI put it in L4, just when I remove it from gear.
Thanks for all the help, I apprechiate it. I've never had a vehicle with 4x4 before, hell I've never even owned a truck before. Its great to be able to get help like this.
My gears are the same. I just live with it. I usualy put it in 5th befor droping it in reverse or 3erd befor 1st to avoid the "grind".
I believe that the gear oil is the problem as Edgeman said.
I think it is a result of the input shaft running in the output shaft and the oil transfering the energy as a torque converter dose. Large highway tractors have a transmition break at the botom of the stroke of the clutch for this reason. There probably is some syncro wear but defintly not worth letting some hack near your transmition.
But I do not believe the change to synthetic will do any good as the viscosity will not change in fact I wonder if it may be worse as the oil you have now should be detererated to a thiner viscosity. Synthetic oil will generate less heat in hight demand situations and have less "drag" when cold making it good for my milage in the winter (I think synthetic is a waist of cash unless you can justify the cost).
As for 4LOW not working, try pushing the transfer case shifter forward a bit after moving it to the left, you may not have it engaged in 4LOW yet.
When tryin to go to 4low, does the shifter hit the floor? If so, you may need to stop by a toyota dealer and get the plastic parts(bushings) for the shifter. It's very easy to put in, just move the boot out the way, you'll see a collar that's spring loaded, push it down and twist like you would a medicine bottle. Then pull the shifter upwards. When playing hard in the swamps I had to use a bungie cord to hold the transfer case in 4low.
