Headers for a 91 3.0 V6 P/U

Ive done a search and have found a lot of people recommend LC Engineering for Toyota Performance...But I've also looked at Performance Products. Basically Performance stocks Downey Ceramic Headers...which are nice...but they require you buy an additional "cross over pipe" that adds about 150 bucks more to the cost of the headers ~$350. LC offers their own Headers for also about 350...but they make no mention of any cross over pipe. Is this pipe absolutely necessary? Are there any other header manufacturers out there?

I've thought about getting some custom ones from a local performance muffler shop...but I've read that header fabrication is a science as well as art form. How can you tell if a local shop is knowledgeable enought to do the work? And can they make them CARB legal? I already have a Borla Cat Back/ K&N Filter Charger and a High Flow Cat so the Headers are the last bit of kit to getting my airflow working great.

Thanks.

not just for performance

I belive the crossover is the main reason for the gasket failures, due to diff heat/cool rates at the firewall end. If you need to remove the heads trust me headers simplify the job. If you do decide too $$$ Rent a good saber saw and go to town... gl
