Trucks : American or otherwise

Why do most trucks have the exhaust pipes pointed towards the right and not the usual to the rear?

I have no idea, but I do know that if mine were straight out the back, it would be totally flattened (rocks) and it would have needed to be replaced a number of times. As it is, it's almost half-circle shaped. It's definitely a better design to have them out to the side directly behind a tire for those that wheel their rigs.

I might be generalizing here, as I have no idea what vehicles have it where, but they probably aren't designed for the rough stuff if they go straight back. Is this really the norm on trucks?

i've heard something about it being easier to do it out the side if it's rwd, but i'm not sure about this. like maybe the rwd stuff takes up too much room. or maybe i'ts just what u said, it'd be flattened if it was straight out. i have notice however that many that are "done up" have them coming straight out the back.

Lot's ov SUV have the spare tire under the truck, almost all SUV have a rear differential .and if you don't want to smell exhaust when you bring something with the tailgate windows open ,i think it's better to have the exhaust tip on the side.

It also prevents back pressure through the exhaust, the closer the end of the exhaust is to the headers, the more power you have (too close can cause damage). Quicker repsonse. Thats just touching up on it.

Simple. The reason is so you don't blow exhaust junk onto whatever you are towing.

I thought so too. I had a pair of Monza dual tips with resonators coming out the back. On the Rubicon, I dropped the rear of the truck three feet onto on a rock (on the slabs). The tips didn't cave at all but they did dent the hell out of the valance above when they were pushed into it. Surprised me.
