improved power mods for 22R

after thinking about several swap options i've decided to build my truck (an '85 4WD) with the stock 22R.

the question now is how to extract more juice from this motor. right now its fully stock (carbed) so it makes just enough power to get around but clearly not enough. what kinds of mods can i do without voiding any possibility to pass the (cali) smog inspection? there must be something i can get away with, they can't be that strict on an '85, can they?
