So I put them back to specs, started it up and got one good tick. You could definitly tell it was a valve.
I thought I screwed up, so I readjusted the valves again...but came back with the same results. I readjusted a few more times until I finally gave up. I read that this kind of tapping is normal for the engine, but I just didn't hear it before because the valves were too tight...
I did replace the valve adjustment screws (got them for about $2.50 each from 1sttoyotaparts.com...luckily that dealer is located close to me so no shipping charges ) After replacing all the screws, I still have the tap (doesn't seem as loud)....but I did notice the truck being a lot smoother upon acceleration. Here is a picture of my adjusting screws compared to a new one:
You can see the 'hourglass' shape. Notice one (red dot) is pitted..
I forgot I had this...sound clip of the valve tapping/ticking (before screw replacement): http://www.members.aol.com/jamy4us/truck/yota/tick.wav

I am struggling with something very similiar to this.... I recently purchased my truck.. A 92 Pickup with the 22re.... It had 105,000 miles on it and had a noticeable timing chain issue... I replaced it with a dual row timing chain, new cover, metal guides, and new tensioner. also installed a new water and oil pump while I was in there....
Everything went fine but now I can hear some valve noise.... So I adjusted the valves several times and never could get rid of it.... It sounds almost exactly like you're sound clip except not quite as loud. However it is loud enough to hear inside the cab with the radio off.... I will try replacing the adjusting screws.... thanks... anything else you think it could be plase let me know....
