One of the best pickups Toyota ever made was the FJ45 Toyota Landcruiser Pickup with the 2F straight six engine.

But seeing as how old they are, and the fact that they have become collectors items, it might be out of your price range.

They also lack power goodies (which I've personally never cared about in off-road vehicles).

pricing on toyota's is pretty much up & down due to owners coveting them and thinking they may be worth more than they are... Sometimes you can find people who have no idea of their value... Then you're set. Try to decide what you want and then just search high and low for the best deal. Also if you aren't going seriously off roading stay away from the 85' as it will drive up the price considerably... this is a first truck not the last truck..you'll definately have others... I owned an 1980 4x4 pickup (I wish to god I still had it) It was so simple and nothing could kill it... I drove home for 2 hrs with the 22r pulling away from the transmission. through serious mud... still made it home... Oil pouring out of the block the whole time...still ran every day and started in -40 canadian weather like a charm with no block heater... Now I own a 86 4runner (fun as hell) nicer ride on ashphalt but nowhere near as bulletproof as the 80....

I was always under the impression that if you're going offroading you need at least a 6 for a heavy vehicle. Then again, I've never driven a 22R, so I don't know. The old Army jeeps had 4s, but they were significantly ligher.

Maybe a 22R-TE?

My '85 (with a 22R and 5-speed) was probably the best balanced 4WD I have driven. It was geared low enough to idle over rough terrain where I had to constantly use the clutch in my V8 powered Scout. I took it places I don't think my V6 T100 (with auto) will go. If your type of four-wheeling involves going as fast as possible, a larger engine might be nice. A properly geared 4 banger will do the job for the type of offroading I do.

It depends on what type of off roading one plans to do. For hardcore mudding and sand duning, then yes a bigger engine is better. But for normal trail riding, rock crawling, non-racing sand duning and non racing mud bogging the 22re is fine.
