whining noise

I have a whining noise on my 94 4Runner. Thinking maybe speedo cable. It gets a higher pitch when speeding up. Have had a cable go out on my parents Chevy van when I was driving it at 16. Sounds exactly the same. My dad kept greasing it on the van. Where can I get at it to try this? It's not in the dash where the noise is. I'm thinking the other end where ever that's at. Or maybe it's loose. The speedometer itself reads just fine. I'll drive this thing till the wheels fall off. But these small senseless problems are giving me fits. Looks, runs and drives great!

just got a 94 4runner myself and have the same whining in the tranny. the guy i got it from said that a tranny guy, to the side away from the manager, told him it was a non-essential bearing, or something like that, and it was a nuisance, but it wasn't a problem. he said he'd had many toyotas and if it got bad you could drop the tranny and replace the $5 bearing, otherwise it could go 2ooK miles and you're fine.mine whines 1-3, then 4 is quiet and 5th gear is a little whiny. I'm taking it to the dealer to see what they say, i guess.help somebody!
