Just bought a 2001 pre runner

I must say I am very impressed with this truck, its my first toyota and all the good things Ive heard seem very true. My bud has a tundra and that is a great riding truck. I just had a few questions about the truck in general. Its an xtra cab with the 3.4 liter engine. Its got a trailer hitch on it but Im not sure if it has a towing package, is there anyway to tell? Also did the pre runners come with any kind of limited slip rear end? Finally whats the general opinion on the 3.4 liter engine and are there any areas in these trucks to keep an eye on. I'm very anal about scheduled maintenance so all of that will be taken care of. Just in case it helps it has 46k miles on it.

thanks

The 3.4L is a very good engine and has no common problems in stock form. You can supercharge it for more power. LSDs do not come stock, but I believe you can add one. A full rear locker does come stock with the TRD package, you'll know you have a locker if you have a dashboard button that says "RR diff lock."

I'm not sure, but I don't think there is a specific towing package, just a hitch. If it's an automatic you can always add a tranny cooler for $50.

It's a great truck. I have a 96 4-runner and never had any problems at 192,345. They have the same 3.4 engine. I bought my 01 d-cab taco with no problems. The only thing the 01 taco is that it does not have a grab bar on the driver's side area. I bought a grab bar and installed it myself. It is easier for me now to get in and out. I was planning to attach photo of my truck but the site won't up load it becuse the file is too big.

I tell you what, I'm going on week 3 with this truck and love eveything about it, I dont know why out of all the trucks Ive owned I never bought one, but Toyota might have gotten a buyer for life in me. The 3.4 is great, plenty of power, quiet, idles smooth, great truck and motor. The ECT auto tranny shifts pretty darn good too.
