Tapping Engine Noise-HELP!

I have an 88 4Runner with a 22RE, 180,000 kms (110,000 miles)ebuilt head about 30,000 kms ago by the previous owner. Unfortunately, the previous owner was one of those people who should not own such a fine piece of equipment. To get teh gunk out of the engine, I finally had to run automatic tranny fluid mixed in the motor oil for about 1000kms to clean the black out. After running this, the oil stays relatively clean, but I cleaned something that should not have been so spotless. Now, only when the oil is hot, and only ittermittantly, between 2000 and 2500rpm, I get a rapid tapping noise, almost a rolling clatter. If it was a Chev V8, I'd say I had a weak lifter. Any ideas? My experience is more dealing with Cummins, Detroit and Cat, although no one else touches my babies! I was thinking valve set maybe, or timing chain? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. My email is MBVROC@hotmail.com.

Thanks,
D'mon

I had something similar happen in my 4runner..22re...But I ignored it for a couple weeks.. suddenly I lost all my power (not that I had tons to start with) and this horrible racket started emanating from the engine.... after swapping engines and taking the latter apart I found some collapsed lifters....kick ass....

Thanks. I didn't think there would be lifters on an overhead cam engine, but I was going to check the manual, you can bet! I have made a list of things that need doing, such as valve lash, cheking the timing chain and wear plates, cleaning the black gunk out of my injection system, and of course putting my summer tires back on come spring. She looks so sad in stock wheels, my 31" mudders/turbines look so much nicer! I've picked up a ton of tricks from this n/g and others, I think my bike may sit for a while come spring.

Thanks again.

I did the valve lash this afternoon, even checked the (ick) plastic timing chain guide. Valves were too loose, most by 2-3 though. Did them up proper, put my baby back together and went riding. The noise is still there. I'm starting to think ignition (except the noise does not go away by moving the distributor and the plugs are a light chocolate color).

I give up, think I'll try chemicals (maybe I'll get some chemicals for the truck too! )

tapping noise

This tapping noise when hot could be caused by a bad knock sensor. The timing would not retard when knocking occurs if knock sensor wasn't working.

I haven't heard the sound, so I'm just suggesting this as a possibility.

Re: tapping noise

I've got a tap too. Not been getting worse so I'm leaving it alone.

Mine is most noticable in a cold engine (winter is particularly noticable even though I keep her in a semi-heated basement garage). Stomp on the gas and the tap almost disappears. Take your foot completely off the gas and the tap almost disappears. maintain speed (coasting but not slowing down) and the tap is most noticable. Makes me think - piston wrist pin.

Stomp on the gas and the increased cylinder pressure keeps the piston down on the pin most of the time. Take your foot off the gas completely and the increased cylinder vacuum keeps the piston off the pin (so to speak) most of the time. Coast and the piston is moving the most against the pin. Once the pin gets warm (5 minutes or so) and expands, extra play goes away and tap quiets down below the noticable level.

That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

i've got a 22re and i have a similar knock. I almost think its messed up injectors because it only happens after i stomp on the gas. The valves are adjusted to spec so i am also kinda stumped. Could be knock sensor also i suppose
