Exclamation 3VZ-E V6 valve clearance

I recently bought an 89 toyota pickup and it was running kinda shitty when i bought it. I normally do all my own maintainence, but when i got to adjusting the valve clearance (it was ticking loudly) i read that the 3vz-e has valve shims instead of screw adjustable. Which means i gotta measure the clearance, go out buy new shims and install them.
Is this task to much of a bitch to do yourself, should i just take it to a mechanic? What does everyone else do? Any tips or suggestions would be great.

Never done it, sounds like a PITA. If you have an understanding parts department, maybe they'll give you a list of shim thicknesses and part numbers. Then measuring and getting the right shim would be a bit easier, but not easy.
