Okay, it was a good weekend repair-wise.
I adjusted the valves (most were 2-4 thou loose, but three were too tight), changed the oil, adjusted wheel bearings (the driver side you could feel free play!), and ended up replacing the original wheel bearings on the driver side front wheel (with SKF, of course). They were stressed adn the inner had "purpled" from heat, replaced teh (probably ok) outer also. I even installed the SR5 map light I scrounged from the wrecker and washed the salt and grit off my poor truck.
I've hesitated on posting this, but the noise is back to a regular 4 cylinder tappity-tap. When I did the oil change I tried out some chemicals. I bought Slick 50 for high mileage engines and dumped it in with the new oil. I've used Slick 50 before, works fine but had never tried this hi-mile version before. So far, not bad. And of course, it has more pep and feels "tighter", both engine-wise and suspension-wise.
On the other hand, if you are like me you realize that just the act of spending an entire weekend of working on and pampering my beastie makes her feel special, thereby having her run better. There is a reason I name my toys: my 4Runner is the Tonka Truck because the most fun reliable and durable (almost indestructable) toy I had when I was a kid was a Tonka Truck. You can guess why I named my Kawasaki 1500cc Vulcan "Demon"....
