I recently bought a 94 Toyota Ext cab 4wd pick up with a 22re engine in it. I really dont know to much about trucks yet, but was looking to get some more hp. So I decided to get a set of headers but was wondering wich one was better LC engineering or Downey headers ??? I was also looking at purchasing the EFI package from LC engineering but dont know if its worth it. Some suggestions for more performance mods would be greatly appreciated, not to much on off-roading, more on speed. THANKZ!!!
I have a 93 and apparently have a "rare" OBDII version or something like that. LC has a nice header and it went in perfectly. The header pipes, of which they offer two, didn't work for my truck at all. Unfortunately, I also ordered the entire exhaust system and it was a big waste of my money. The exhaust didn't fit, hung too low, is way too loud and I'm pretty disappointed with it.
I started with a stainless steel, ceramic coated system, but now I have a SS/ceramic header, steel header pipe, LC Converter (Car Tunes I think), steel center pipe, SS/Ceramic muffler and tailpipe. Total expense (less the header) was well over $500 for everything behind the header.
I suggest if you go LC, get the header and plan on not getting their exhaust...you can go much better/less expensive if you have a muffler shop do the work.
I also developed a check engine light (EGR) just two days after installing the header. I've been told the header can't cause this, but I've had the truck for 4 years and no warning lights. I've replaced $400 worth of parts and still have the light. I'm planning on putting the stock manifold back on to see if it makes the light disappear, if it does...I plan to post it to let people know. I'm hoping it's just coincidental, though, because the header is a nice one and I did notice the improvements.
I bought the downey header and was very satisfied. In 8 years of use on a 4x4 in the swamps it never leaked or any problems. Nice thick flanges and O2 mounts at top and bottom.
Hey MASCOT I had the same problem with my mitsubishi galant. Because the car was made to be sold in cali it had the ODBII emissions system on it. All I did was change out my 2 O2 sensors and everything worked fine, no cel. But in some cases people had to get their 2nd O2 sensor moved behind the second cat, so the 2nd O2 sensors wouldnt read the same. Did you use to have 2 cat-converters before the header install ???
hmmmm...that's weird. I originally had one cat but two sensors and they're both mounted in the same location as before. So let me see if I read that correctly: when you added the header you got a check engine light - and when you replaced the sensors it went away? What did you do for sensors, what did you replace the stock ones with?
Ops sorry man I just re-read your post again, did you get a EGR reading ??? If you did just check your egr valve, if its bad youll probably get bad gas milage too. I dont really know were its located on your truck but if its close to your header you could have burnt something like wires from the excessive heat.
hehe...well, this is an interesting read. It's a 22RE, so the EGR valve is on the opposite side of the head. When this first showed up I got a code 7-1 (EGR) and I replaced the EGR Temp Sensor (protective sleeve was torn over wires) and that didn't change anything. I was told by one shop it was the EGR Valve, so I replaced it and the Modulator. No change. So I went to Toyota of Temecula and they charged me $75 and told me, after a two hour wait, that it was the EGR Vacuum Switching Valve. The tech told me he tested the VSV and that it was inoperative. How convenient was it that the VSV was the fourth component, and the only one I hadn't replaced! He guessed, plain and simple, because I bought the VSV and installed it and still had the CEL. Their parts department even gave me the wrong part number and I had to re-order the correct one (duh...the part number is actually on the VSV but the tech didn't realize it).
So I took it back to Temecula and they told me it was "something simple" and the service writer told me to wait for it. After three hours of waiting they told me they didn't have time to look at it. What a crock! So I went home and I tested my old VSV against the factory specs and it was fully functional and not inoperative as I was told. Now I have replaced all four EGR components, I even plugged in a different computer and a different Air Flow Meter and I still have the CEL. I guess it could be the O2 sensor(s), but I'm baffled by this.
I'm taking it to another Toyota dealer where an old friend is service manager (why didn't I think of that in the first place!) and he will use the scantool to try to figure it out. I'm really at my wits end with this one!
Be sure to go after the first dealer for refund since they did not fix the problem. God, it scares me what kind of troglodite they must have working there. The computer tells all. What happened to mechanics who could diagnose by feel and hearing and experience. I NEVER pay twice for the same jpb...and you should not either! If your buddy's dealership finds teh problem, find out from him how to contact Toyota for the refund....
Yeah, I hear you. I've sent them about nine emails, and I also filed a complaint with the BAR here. When they found out that I refuse to return to their dealership and that I filed a complaint, they decided to reimburse me as a "gesture of good will". What a crock. Toyota, unfortunately, said they can't help since it's a service issue.
The very good news, and I probably shouldn't elaborate here, is that the BAR called me an hour ago and are "interested". That's all I will say until this gets resolved. I'll keep you posted.
The thing about all this is that I used to be a service writer and I changed a lot of shop policies regarding "diagnose" because every time I brought in a car that "wouldn't start" the tech told me within five minutes that he needed a starter. After that was sold and installed, the tech returns with "I also need an ignition switch"...and they couldn't understand why I refused to pay them an hour for (not) diagnosing the problem.
When I brought my truck in I was very specific about getting an honest diagnostic, and not a recommendation to replace the only part I hadn't yet replaced...which is what they ended up doing.
