I don't think the tranny is the same. Don't know about the mounts. Harness would be different. What year truck and what year engine are you thinking about?

oh 96-99 and i would assume same year motor or slightly newer motor i have seen a 97 with this done but have no way of contacting owner he lives in san diego i saw the car on cardomain.com. the problem is it seems that the tacomas hold there value well and finding a truck cheap enough to still have money for engine and parts is proving difficult. also i would be puting the engine myself not taking it somewhere thanks. also i have a buddy witha 94 toy pickup and he wants to do the same if anyone knows about that also that would be a big help.

I believe they are different transmissions. I don't have a 4 banger handy to look at, but by looking at the service manual, it appears the starter is on the other side and the bell housing would not bolt up. You would need the engine and tranny out of the donor vehicle as well as the computer, smog equipment, everything from the afm to the catalytic converter, wiring harness, etc. I'm swapping a 97 V6 into a 90 4Runner with the 3.0 V6 and the tranny matches up and so do the engine mounts, so I don't have that to deal with, but splicing the wiring harness together and swapping in all the other stuff to make it legal is quite a bit of work, some fabrication, and extra money that I didn't think about. Also, the 3.4 V6 is tall, so I need either a hood scoop or a body lift to get the clearance on my Runner so I can close the hood. Just some stuff to think about.

You can do anything as long as you have the money. Its not easy but it could be done, not sure as it what would bolt up I know the motor mounts will not
