AHH!! I found a nice 4 runner but it has an auto trans!!
Can I swap in a 5 speed?? I really don't want to learn on an automatic, and i want the 5 speed i think automatic is too easy. And for some reason i just want to be able to shift myself at least in my first truck. Would this be PRACTICAL?
what about cost, or labor?? My dad has replaced a transmission on his own before so i could, but is it a practical thing to do?? cause if not i dunno if i should even bother considering the truck or not... what do you think i should do??
Oh and by the way, it's an 1986 with a 4 cylinder turbo with EFI...part of the reason why i like it.
Another reason, it's gray, a good 4 runner color.
and it also has a very good body and interior based on the pics and the only thing that i don't like is the auto...
it's currently at 3,500...worth it? and even with my problems with it? I was wondering if there are any reasons why i would not want this year or engine... because i looked and searched but i didn't find anything, and i don't know of any bad things on this model...
Well, it has one positive going for it, it's grey (personal opinion). I have not heard of any problem with 86 other than the first yeart of IFS, but I had a 2wd 87 truck and am running an 88 4runner and loving every moment. Both were grey, and both were standard. Sorry I can't help, but I htink you'd be doing fine even with the auto tranny. Think of replacing with a standard when/if the auto goes. As for the 4Runner, you will love it! I guarantee it!
BTW, I got my 4Ryunner last year early spring here in Winnipeg Canada for $3200, stock wheels and 31" mudders on turbines, SR5 seats, and an Alpine stereo. She had 172,000 kms (about 107,000 miles) and with a fresh head job ion the original 22RE (FI 4 cylinder, same as you). It was a good deal, but I bought from a wrecker (this was their winter project to keep them employed). No rust, at least back then-it has a couple of spots that need attention after the snow and salt is gone. Currently, the same is worth around $4000-5000 CDN in private sale here.

Yeah it gave me some yeah, it gave me some good info thank you and it makes me ant a 4 runner even MORE than i already do... They are soo cool, and the removable top is just a bonus. Right now i'm keeping an eye open for a runner between 85 and 89, or rather both eyes...WIDE OPEN. I would like a solid axle, but if i come accross a IFS then i'd take that too as long is it's not a solid body without the removable top which i strongly believe is every 4 runner between those years as far as i know...
sorry about the beginning of the last post, i have a lagging computer, and it didn't show up when typing it's so screwy, so i didn't know i typed it like that! I have another question... could i take a turbo and install it in a non-turbo'd (non-aspirated?) engine?? If so how would that change the performance/reliability of the truck and how much would it cost...and difficulty??
I don't know where you are climate-wise, but I never have (and probably never will) taken the cap off my 4Runner. They are notorious for aligning and getting on right again, so I don't bother. With the windows open and the back open too, I get a lot of air thru anyway. Besides, I don't go too many places without my dog Boomer ( a Blue Heeler) and he would not stay in if I made it that easy to jump out.
I'm just chomping at the bit to put my mudders back on, but the snow (although we are losing it fast and early this year) is still too much, hiding far too much ice. Besides, I do not want the salt on my aluminum rims....
As for the turbo, I have no clue-sorry. I think it would be easier to just put the entire engine in rather than to get your existing engine to run with it. I do know that generally an engine with a turbo runs with lower compression and such, different cam , etc, so if you can get an engine with a turbo, grab it-it will be easier! If this is not true on Toyotas, sorry for the mislead. I'm sure that experts more "in the know" will be along soon.
you mean the mudders would throw do you mean the mudders would throw salt up into the truck with them on so you have the normal ones on?? Can you post pics of both setups...i'm curious to see how both look on the same truck... thanx
the 22re-t works better with the auto because it has less turbo lag that way since the engine dosent lose as much momentum by not having to let off the gas when you shift with the five speed.
