Talking emissions controls

I am in the process of replacing the head gasket and timing chain on my newly acquired 85 Toyota pickup. After getting the engine bay cleaned up, I noticed a lot of wiring frayed and some not even connected.... All of this wiring seems to be connected to vacuum switches and such...

My question to all of you guys is: Can the emissions controls (vacuum hoses, canisters, wiring, switches, etc..) be removed or plugged without adverse affect on drivability??

What is involved? What can be removed and what can not?

I know it is going to take a bit of writing to answer, but I a lot of us out there would like to get rid of all of the needless cr@p and don't know how! I would think that if it was done right, then maybe we could gain a few horsepower in the process.

Please let me know what your experiences are on this subject.

Many Thanks!

I think that the requirement to pass emissions tests and inspections for registration has stopped most of us from tinkering with that stuff. I suspect the computer operation, and therefore engine performance, might be adversely affected without some of the emissions cr@p, too.
