Toyota Tacoma 4X4 locked in Park

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4 wheel drive with automatic and 4 banger motor. I go out to the garage and start it but the truck is locked in Park and will not come out. I checked fuses and everything looks OK. Any ideas on the problem would be greatly appreciated. I can't even get it to the shop to have anyone look at it.

is there a shift lock override button anywhere? you could use that

other than that it could be the brake sensor switch, do your brake lights work?

Yes there is a shift lock over ride, if you look on your shift counsel, you'll see a little tab protruding on the top or upper part, just pry that out and it will expose the shift over ride lever, just push that and you will be able to shift.

Are you sure you checked your fuses? Oldman makes a good point, check if your brake lights are working, if not, double check your brake, or tail light fuse again in the engine compartment, I'd be willing to bet that that fuse is blown...

Gentlemen,
Many thanks. I first started out checking the fuses in the cab. Everything was OK. I didn't realize there was a fuse box in the engine compartment. The brake lights were inoperative. After going through the fuses in the engine compartment, I found one blown and replaced it. Now it works. Here in Arkansas no one is on duty anywhere on a weekend except the unskilled boys at Wal-Mart. I'm glad you were on duty and fixed my truck. I have company from out of state for the weekend and now I'm able to do some sight seeing. Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out, luckily it was just the fuse. Don't you love it when your problem turns out to be something minor like that? I sure do...

Talking

Gee, wish my mechanical issues were that easy to fix.
It always seems to be an afternoon's work and a hundred dollars....

Smile Checked fuses, Shifter still doesn't work

I have a 94 4-runner. Came across the same problem with the shifter not working unless I push the overide switch. I checked the fuses under the dash and the ones near the battery. No blown fuse. I can hear an electric click sound from the ignition switch when I press the button on the shifter. Relay? Any ideas? Brake lights don't work either. If it's a fuse I can't find it. Thanks to anyone that can help...

Well,...

The same problem was happening with my 2000 Camry (shift knob stuck at parking -- would not come out unless override switch was pressed). Break lights were not working.

Thanks to your post...I verified the fuses, and sure enough the 15A stop fuse under the driver's dash area was blown.

Thanks a lot guys -- I was already thinking that there was a mechanical problem with the shifting knob!!!

Smile That's awesome!

Thanks for your help on the switch. Works perfect now. I was almost ready to bring it to the dealer. I'm sure I saved a bunch of money on that one. Thanks again....
