new to Toyota truck world ...have ???

I just bought a 1994 4x4 for a second vehicle and was wondering if you guys could help me out. It was a one owner, it is in great shape and just turned 90k. Do these engines (4cyl) need to have a timing belt (or are these chains) changed every so often? Is there any quirks about this engine I should be aware of?

Are there any good performance parts you can get for these engines? It does seem to be a bit under powered.

Thanks

The 22re has a timing chain and I *think* they recommend to change it every 120k. I'm not sure about that number so confirm that with someone else.

It's also fairly easy to get more power too, look around, you'll find stuff. I have the v6 so I don't know a whole lot about the 4cyl.

I'm new to this too, but from what I've seen the timing chain should be done at 200,000kms (or 120,000miles for you non-metric'ers). I just bought off eBay for mine, got all Japanese parts for $30 and shipping ($20). Seeing as the no-name stuff around here was starting at $145 CDN, and this cost me $65 CDN, I think I did good. The best is Toyota (costs around $200 US, I heard), then Jap made (especially with steel chain guides instead of plastic/nylon), last and very least is US made (I don't know why).

As for power, I've heard that the way to go is a header (LC seems the most popular, but you pay for that), lo-flow catalytic converter (or none if you can get away with it!) starting at around $120 US, and a performance cam (tons of them on eBay!).

BTW: I was at the wrecker I hang out at this afternoon and one of the guys there told me of one of their regulars that has a 22R (no, not RE) that is sitting at 915,000 kms with no problems and no rebuilds. That is 570,000 miles, not bad for a four banger! Don't let the V6 guys give you a hard time about your little engine, it will last forever if treated right (regular oil changes and such).

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys...
I've noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine..almost like an exhaust gasket or valve sound. Do you need to adjust the valves on these engines.

The 22R series makes a bit of a tick noise. I had an '87 new that did it from day one, and my 4Runner does it. The worry is when it is loud and noisy.

The valves are easy to adjust on the 22R. I just did mine a couple of weeks ago. As it is overhead cam, do not be fooled by anyone telling you the noise may be from the lifters, there are none. The rockers run directly on the cam nodes and push down the valves all on top. There is an adjustment on each rocker on the cam side.

The adjustment needs to be done with the engine hot (first time I heard of that), but since it is easy it is no heartache. Run the engine up to hot, shut down. Clear off the piping and such that go across the valve cover (making notes-it's easier than trying to figure out an emissions schematic!). Undo the four acorn nuts on top of the valve cover, the ones with the big rubber plugs under them. The cover comes up and off easy, and the top end is there for you to play. BTW: the valve cover gasket is rubber, unless it is damaged you do not have to replace it. The valve lash should be 6 and 8 thou I think (check a book for your specs!). Turn the engine until #1 is at top dead center (0 degrees at your timing mark). Adjust half the valves (as it shows in the book), then rotate the engine 360 degrees back to top dead center again and do the other half. Put alitle silicone on the front of the valve cover gasket at the rubber plug, put on the cover and bolt up. Voila! You are done.

It took me about 1/2 hour for the actual job, but I did stick my trouble light in and check everything out I could before buttoning it up. When the cover is off, it is a good time to do a check of your timing chain....but I'll leave someone else to tell you about them. Mine has arrived, but I have not put it in yet!

First off the 4x4 is geared a lot differently than the 2wd. If you ask me a you drop a $1k into it and you could have a little fun with it.

1st-K & N intake Gen 2 ($200)
2nd-Exhaust w/ high flow cat or none if you know someone to get it to pass smog. Flowmaster or Gibson ($450 includes cat, muffler(s)/ piping from header to tips, exhaust tips)
3rd-Doug Throlley, TRD, or LC Engineering ($350)

This should give you atleast 25 hp and that is a conservative estimate.

If you want more power then go with...

Cams
Light weight pulleys
Lightweight flywheel and clutch

But that gets more expensive expect to pay atleast $2k to have it installed if you can't do it yourself!

Hope this helps!!
