82 toyota engine problem

I have an 82 toyota with a 22R engine. After driving for a while each day, the engine starts to cut out. I can feel it tug a little as it cuts out then it acts like it dies out totally. Once it starts it continues until the truck is shut off. If i push in the clutch to stop while the engine is doing this, the truck dies. It acts like somebody turned off the key. Anyone have any ideas?

I have taken the carb off and put a new carb kit in it. Its all cleaned out and back on now but it didn't help. Could it be a problem with the fuel pump? Anyone have any suggestions for me?

A dirty fuel filter can cause the problems you describe. That is worth checking before looking into the fuel pump.

I have just recently changed spark plugs and the cap and rotor. Everything still seems to be in good working order there. The only other irregularities that I experience is the cutting out of the engine. It will continue to run as long as I keep my foot into it pretty hard and keep the RPM's up, but as soon as I try to let it idle down it just dies. It acts just like the key has been turned off. The local Toyota man said that there is a fuel cylanloid on the carb that could be malfunctioning. He said to check the sensor that regulates it. To make sure that I could hear a clicking sound when I turned on the key. I can hear the clicking, but could it be possible that the little regulator is shorting out when it gets hot and is kicking the fuel cylanoid on and off? The regulator is bolted to the top of the valve cover, anyone no approx cost for a new one?

if the solinoid is clicking it shouldn't be shorting out when it's hot.check the fuel to the inlet hose of the fuel filter, then check the hose on the outlet side see if there is ang cloggs, check the color of your spark plugs.peace

you might want to check for water in the fuel. once, I had got some gas that had somehow gotten water in it, and gave me similiar problems.

Haven't figured it out yet. Think I'm going to change the the fuel pump and see if that works. Plugs are fine, fuel filter is new and there doesn't seem to be any water or obstructions in the lines. If a new fuel pump doesn't work, I'm not sure what to do after that. Maybe new carb? Not sure, have to see what happens.

I had similar problems with two other vehicles years ago. Turned out to be vacuum leaks in the carburetors when the engines warmed up. The carbs were different from the Toyota carbs, but maybe something similar could be happening with your engines, perhaps in the intake manifold gaskets or some sensor hooked to a vacuum line. I don't know how I would isolate the problem. Maybe by disconnecting vacuum lines while the engine is cold to see if the symptoms occur.
