red maniflod/ 22-re problems

Im having some serious problems with my 88 toyota 4x4 22-re fuel injected. It has no power. Going uphill i can get the rpm up at all and have to stay in first and cant get it to shift without the rpms dumping. There is very little acceleration even on the flats. It does have 32x11.50 tires with stock ring and pinion.

Oh
And the exhaust manifold turns red after driving for short distances or up hills.

Please Help?

i would check for a plugged cat, take the cat off and go for a short drive, it will be loud but if you got power, then your cat is plugged up, if its the same then you got another problem, either timing or fuel.

What color are the plug electrodes and such? Maybe it's running way too lean.

The plugs look normal, but we think that mixture is not lean enough because of carbon deposits that we found after taking the exhaust manifold off.

Was this ever resolved?

I am having the exact same problem with an 88 22-RE 4WD Toyota pickup. Did you ever figure out what was causing the lack of power?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Tom

It turned out that the timing was waaaayyyy off. That caused it to not only have zero power but also the manifold to glow. If that is the problem on your truck after you fix it it will be a whole different truck. Good luck on figuring it out and if the timing isnt the problem i would go to
yotatech.com they have been more help to me than toyota nation was...

Check your truck for trouble codes, mine ran the same way, turned out the idiot that owned the truck before me had jammed in the knock sensor connector incorrectly, and the truck had zero power. I'd have to downshift to third to make it up a hill, after doing 55 on level ground. Either that or it's the timing.
