'90 4x4 front hub grinding noise...... need advice

1990 Toyota 4x4 PU, 22RE

Truck makes weird grinding noise only when hubs are unlocked in 2WD above 10- 20 mph. When hubs are locked in 2WD noise is gone. Noise is also gone when truck is put into 4WD, and I think noise is gone even when in 4WD with hubs not locked.

Trying to figure out where the problem is, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like the hub is not disengaging all the way and is rubbing the axle splines, i would pull and clean both hubs and try it again
