22-re help

Im having major problems with my 88 toyota 4x4 with a 22-re engine. It has no power and the exhaust manifold gets extremly hot. Red hot acutallly. The truck has great difficulty going up hill and i cant get it to shift from first gear while going uphill without the rpms dumping. Please Help.

And the muffler and cat are not clogged so that isnt the problem.

I am having the same type of problem with the power up the hill issue, but i have problems getting out of 2nd without the rpms dumping and having to shift back down to second gear. My Mani doesn't get red hot but the power isn't there. Sucks huh. Anyone have any ideas for our problem.

My guess is your engine timing is retarded causing the gasoline explosive gases not to complete ignite in the combustion chambers and have their exaust gases exit at the right time.So make sure your engine timing is at 5 degrees BTDC with check engine/timing connector shorted or 8 degrees without as stated in the emissions stickers found inside the hood or in the service manual.

I've seen plugged cats cause this problem, or a restriction anywhere in the exhuast system.

Well I fixed my problem and it ended up that the TPS was bad so the timing was way retarded. I got the new TPS and adjusted my timing and it goes up hills fine. Check the TPS to see if it is working by, shorting the test connector and seeing which code you get. The tps is 11 blinks of the check engine light. or while the truck is running short the test plug and see if the idle drops. If it does the tps is good if not try adjusting the TPS until the test plug shorted will make the idle drop. Set your timing at 5 degrees with the test plug shorted. test plug was a yellow 2 pin on the drivers side inner wheel well with nothing connected to it. this worked for me. Tell me what happens.

yea the mani getting hot could be a exhaust issue. on my 96 dodge ram 1500 v8 318. after i gutted the cat it all was fine. had power and the rpms wwas running up fine again. could also be a oygen senser causeing it to run bad also. oygen senser could tell it to its running lean and it pump gas to it or running rich and take the gas away

A lean running engine will cause the glowing manifold. When mine had the same problem it was an intake leak. A quick check is to spray a little starting fluid around the intake side of the engine with it running and see if the rpms jump. Just another thing to check out.
