Unhappy Damn that wasnt good.

New 04 4x4 Taco engine running in park and I hit the 4x4 high/low shifter with my knee and grinded the gears pretty good.

Should I worry?

It only has 500 miles on it and I really dont notice any problems since this has happend.

Ummm.......you werent moving and put it into 4wd? There should be no sounds whatsoever. Something is wrong. How else would you put it into 4wd? 55 mph on the hwy? No.

Take it in and let them know. Try putting it into 4wd on a dirt road and driving.....see if the problem persists.

Yes, I was sitting in my driveway while the engine was running in park and I turned around to reach something in the back seat and my knee hit the 4x4 shifter and grinded gears.

My last truck didnt have that shifter, just a nob on the dash. So im not familar with this type.

After I hit the shifter with my knee I wasnt exactly sure where it should be. N, H, or L. So I put it in N and it grinded again. That's when I pulled my instruction manual out and read it should be in the bottom posistion. High I believe while normal driving.

I'll will most likely never use 4x4 High or low. But it scared the **** out of me being it's brand new and grinding the gears isnt a good thing.

if u pust the 4x4 button nothing should grind but changing from hi to low it will grind at a standstill and will grind in park. Its not something u should do everyday but an ocasional thing isn't going to hurt it, but do be carful these aluminum transfer cases are not as bulletproof as their predesesors.

So my 4x4 button must have been pushed in Huh?

I read over the instruction manual and it looks like shifting from Hi to low is done while in motion. What's up with that?

None of the 4wds I have owned have ever ground when shifting into any gear. I am sure it says that shifting from hi to low can be done while in motion....but you dont have to.

u don't have to be moving with a manual transmission but the autos should be in motion. Basically there are actual gears in the transfer case and the transmission doesn't have gears but rather bands, since there isn't a clutch to disengage the engine from the drivetrain things are spinning in the transmission, that greeeer clang was a grear being suddenly stopped, so by moving, the gears slip into position better. Over time as thing wear in it won’t grind at all.

alls the 4x4 switch does is engage front hubs so it will grind weather the switch is on or off. basically your always in 4wd either hi or low, one of the reasons for the shitty gas milage, then torque is converted to the front wheels when the hubs are locked in

Ahhhhh, you guys got me confused.

One guy tells me one thing and the next guy tells me another. So which is it, will it grind?

Thanks

Ahh.....I just realized that you are talking about a push button type shifter.....none of my 4wd's have that setup.
