1991 2x4 truck 22re - a few questions...

I have a 1991 Toyota 2x4 truck with the 22re and about 320,000 kms on it. I'm having a problem with the idle. When I start the truck, it idles around 1500 rpm, then after it's warmed up it drops to between 500 & 600 rpm. The engine is almost to the point of stalling and the oil pressure drops. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm looking for white gauge faces for this truck with kilometres as the main unit. Anyone know where to find them, or just generally any good Canadian sources for mods for this truck?

Thanks,

Colin

Timing chain

I had a similar problem with my 93 pickup with the 22re engine. It seemed to idle rough and sometimes it took a couple of trys to start. It would also stall at stoplights at low rpm. The problem lasted a couple of months and then my truck overheated.

The problem was the plate between the water pump and timing chain. One of my guides wore out and the timing chain wore through the housing and allowed coolant to enter the crankcase. I noticed the problem before any engine damage was done, but I had to change the plate ($228 from toyota) and it cost me lots of labor. The radiator, a/c compressor, accessory belts, water pump, distributor, had to be removed. I ended up changing the water pump, timing chain and gears.

Cutting to the chase, keep a close watch on coolant temperature and oil condition. There is no easy way to check the water pump housing without taking everything apart.

you can bump the idle up a little bit if you're not too worried about it by using the screw on the "efi" labled air plentum by the throttle linkage, it is on top and kind of recessed on the passenger side of the plentum
