4 speed to 5 speed trans swap 87 toyota truck

does anyone know what it takes to swap a 4 speed to a 5 speed in my 87 toyota pickup 2wd standard cab with a 22r motor? does the trans tunnel have to be cut and a different lenght drive shaft needed. or is it a direct bolt in? what would be the best year trans to install.
thanks for any posts.

If you are just going to go from 4 speed to 5 speed there are no modifications necesary. If you go with the more desirable Celica 5 speed then you do have to modify the shift handle but otherewise its just a direct replacement.

Ok, good question. I found a 1987 5 speed for my 88 4 speed truck. I wont have to hack the tunnel then. That's great news. Is there anyway I can check the used trans before I go through all of the hassle of putting it in? Thanks.

Check the input shaft to see if you can pull it out and push it in. Don't be alarmed if you can push it up and down a little, but you don't want it to move in and out very much at all. You should be able to put it in all gears and listen a little, not the best test, but better than nothing. Listen to 5th.

Guys, is 1st any lower? I can't find a gear chart anywhere for the 4 and 5 speed.
