I just purchased a 86 toyota truck 22re...i didn't know it had a blown head gasket till it was to late...there is water in the oil.....I never fixed one.....I am fairly mechanical.i have fixed manhy parts on a car before.......does anyone know of sites to help me do this....does anyone have any insight....please write back with any advice...i just need it to run and not overheat....and get the water out of the oil.......i need to do this for under 500 dollars...
I hate to say it, but if you've never done a cylinder head job on a vehicle I'd hate to do that one first. That being said let me tell you I've blown several head gaskets on my22r and the most helpful words I have are; get the gasket from the dealer and replace all the head bolts. While you're there you may as well replace the timing chain. It's almost got to be rubbing the timing cover by now. A proper job even done by yourself will cost pretty close to $500.
thank you....one question i have is how critical it is to have the head machined....???? another thing...i read that someone did there head gasket....put it back together ....put the chain on one tooth wrong and then whamo ...it bent the rods....umm...any advice on what to look for to avoid this.....this link http://www.rock-it-land.com/southwes...headrepair.htm shows a good pic of accomplishing top dead center....but i dont know about the timing chain
i would rebuild the entire engine, and do it right. http://www.engnbldr.com/ has a nice resonable rebuild kit. the engine will last longer, and will be around 5...plus you will learn alot, and thats the fun part.
definatly stay away from the dealerships, unless you feel like being ripped off. you can usualy find the same part for sometimes half as much, and of better quality.
for 500$ you can buy a complete rebuild for your 22re...this will last you another 300,000 miles (yeah, no typo)...thats if you do the work yourself. get a buddy, or just go for it... like i posted before check that other forum...more knowledgable then this one. they will help you more. lots of tips/hints/old posts.
the new timing chain will come with marks that line up on the sprockets. Just take your time, it won't bend the rods, but will break 4 rocker arms and bend 4 valves from 1 tooth off. I got personal experience on that one.
latest update.....but first i will say thanks for all the response....ok...today...i took auto to one shop...guy was good talker...sold me on a 600 dollar job (valve and head gasket job) on an engine with 200k miles....i was sold until i called another mechanic who specialized in the engine 22r...and he was so angry the first guy was going to do a valve job on a 200k engine block and said just do the head gasket...so know i am just doing the head gasket for 325 dollars......i wish i had enough expertise and patience to rebuild this car for 500 because i would...but i dont know if i want to keep it for so long...///what does anyone think about the different opinions on the jobs the two mechanics are up to.......
to me it's not worth it. mechanics are over priced, they have huge overheads to pay for, and are always in competition with one another to make a buck... if you have any knowledge of working with cars you can do this job. if you research it, ask forums, find out as much as you can, and buy a toyota 22r manual from napa, or any auto parts store, then you should be good. i would recommend doing the engine work yourself, if you have the time and patience. but if you don't, and just want to blow your cash on a mechanic who may, or may not completly fix it, then go for it. i see mechanics as a place to go if you don't have any time or knowledge of what you are driving.
it's your truck/engine, the mechanic is just going to do what he's paid for, so nothing else will be touched even if it needs to be fixed. the value of the truck will only increase if you rebuild it.
Unless the mechanics can tell exactly why the water is in the oil?..
The problem might not even be the head gasket.., it could be the timing chain cover, and it may be wise to have a leak-down test done as well...
Its possible the thing will need an entire rebuild anyways.., but valves and headgasket/timing gear may do the trick.
yer gonna need at least a full top end gasket kit for around $100. I recommend fel-pro. You should get the head pressure tested to make sure it isn't warped. While its out, might as well do the valve job. Pressure check and valve job should run around $140. Spend $12 and buy yourself a manual. This will give you complete instructions on finding TDC and making sure everything goes smooth. I don't think there's anything i am missing. If you don't know how long you are going to keep it then i would say do this. If you plan to keep the truck, rebuild the motor, its fun.
