Talking 1995 Toyota Tacom 4X4 steering issue

Hello all:

I am having issues with my 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 in regards to steering. I took it to my local alignment shop in town here and they advised that something was loose or broken or possible a bolt was broken. The said that they were not able to do an alignment on the truck because the wheels even though the steering wheel is locked there is too much play in it. I have checked underneath the truck for any loose bolts or anything cracked and have not found anything, EXCEPT that the steering gear assembly is moving when the wheels are locked. The movement is noticeable more on the passenger side by the grommet. If anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again for any help.

Sounds like bad hubs. Put the front end on jack stands and grab the front tire with one hand at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock and wiggle it perpendicular to the plane of the tire.....it should not move. If it does, your hub is bad.

What steering gear are you talking about? The worm gear inside the box? Or are you referring to the steering shaft? If it is the shaft, one of the joints might be worn out.

When you say 95 tacoma do you really mean the tacoma or the older pickup? Tacoma's came out at 95.5 and have rack and pinion steering while the older ones have recirculating ball steering. If it's the older one then the idler arm can become worn and you will need to rebuild it or replace it. Toyota makes a rebuild kit that's really cheap.
