Hey everyone, i'm new to the forum. I did a search on google and found this forum. Forum looks nice and thank god it's a
VB script forum at that
Anyways, i have a 1991 Toyota 4WD, standard cab, standard bed, 5 spd. The engine is a 1988 22RE. The truck has been running excessively rich for the past couple of months so i decided to get off my duff and replace the O2 sensor. Previous to replacing the O2 sensor, my Check Engine light was always on.
Now that i have replaced the O2 sensor, the truck runs minimally better yet still gets poor gas mileage. Heres the thing. The check engine light does not light up on the dash UNTIL i get going down the road and shift into 3rd gear. At the instant the CE light comes on, you can feel the truck stumble/miss, and it seems that load on the engine is what triggers the CE light.
Now i'm no shadetree mechanic, but i have eliminated the air filter as a culprit. My gut feeling tells me this problem is ignition related for some reason. The truck continues to run excessively rich, idles somewhat poor and burbles and misses upon deceleration(probably a product of the truck running pig rich). The truck is all stock, no mods.
Any ideas? Cap and rotor? I don't think they've ever been changed and the truck has 151kmi on it. I'm sure a new cap and rotor would help, as new plugs, but i don't think plugs alone is going to cure my problem here. Is this a common problem? Anyone have insight? Thanks in advance.
