Hey everyone, new to the board but not Toyota's, we are looking at releasing a single turbo kit for 89-95 trucks and 4-runners, and just wanted to spread the word and see how much interest there is in a kit like this. Full Boogie Racing has done custom kits for the 22RE engine powered trucks but have a couple of local guys with the 3.0L that want some more power. Full Boogie's owner personally owns a '88 4x4 truck turbo'ed of course and knows not many options are out there for the 3.0L guys.
Let us know what you are thinking on this subject.
I'm no expert on the 3.0, but with all the head gasket troubles that engine has had, and from discussing with a machinist who has done a lot of work for the dealer on the service campaign related to that head gasket issue, I would not think that is a good candidate for boosting. The machinist seemed to think that the bolts were not close enough together for good clamping. Has there been much success with boosting that engine anywhere?

The problem with the 3.0L head gaskets is Toyota's crossover pipe. Everyone I have delt with that has changed out the factory manifold and crossover pipe with headers and a Y-pipe that crosses under the truck have had no problems. As a machinist I can tell you the head bolt placement shouldn't be a problem, look at a 22RE block, the bolt holes are not casted with the cylinder walls, they are casted with the outside walls. This is the reason we no longer hone a 22RE with a torque plate, it made no difference to the cylinders with the plate bolted on, usually you can see around a .0005" difference with the cylinder walls on a domestic V-8 when you unbolt a torque plate, that is not seen on a 22RE block. I don't see a problem with a properly tuned 3.0L, if I remeber correctly the 3.4L also had a recall on a head gasket problem and you can get one supercharged from the factory, obviously the 3.0L setback is cast pistons, but once again properly tuned won't offer up any problems for quite awhile.
Thanks

I see. On the 3.4, I think it was only 96 with the problem, btw. As for the 3.0, shows what I know, eh? So do you have anyone running the turbo kit on the 3.0 yet? What are the results? Just curious.

This is what we want though is feedback and comments
Currently we have a couple local guys that want it done, we just wanted to get an idea of how many people might be interested to justify ordering the parts and spending the time to make a couple of extra kits to try and sell. We will keep everyone posted with what is going on and of course dyno #'s. We are going to at no charge dyno a couple trucks to get a "stock" figure of what the trucks make to the wheels and after the turbo setup.
Give some power numbers and I may seriously consider. Also estimated price. Right now, the 7mgte swap looks the most promising. You have my attention, convince me to go this route.

Jason, hopefully we can get a kit done up here pretty quick and get some numbers posted. I have seen one 7MGTE swap done and it didn't look like alot of fun! Hopefully a turbo kit will be your route and cheaper.

It will all depend on how much power you want to make, the first kit made will use a small garrett turbo possibly a GT series that is internally wastegated and control boost to a safe 5~6 lbs, at that boost level there will be no other upgrades needed, the stock fuel system should make up for that, if it for some odd reason does not, a pump, FMU or whatever needed will be included in the kit. If something is not right for this whole set-up the kit will not be released. After the first kit is on many pictures will be up will dynographs and we will run the truck hard to find any problems, obviously a tired motor is going to have problems once boost has entered the picture it's a matter of when, but most people do understand this and we will be using a fairly tired truck. The two trucks locally that want kits made are hitting up on the 200,000 mile mark!!! We'll see.

I have 1994 4Runner V6 4WD.
I have been keeping my eye on this site for stuff and am sorry not much has progressed in the V-6 kits, alot of other projects going on, we do have it narrowed down however what turbo is to be used, what type of piping on the exhaust side and intake side to keep the kit at a reasonable price, an owner of one truck has talked to the wrong people and insists an intercooler is needed, but it won't unless you want to run in excess of 10~12 psi (intercooler will be offered as optional). The kits will have an internally wastegated turbo with an actuator keeping the boost right around 7 psi to the gauge. Only the dyno will tell but, 7 psi on a Nissan truck we just did nearly doubled the horsepower, the '97 pick-up with the KA24 engine put down an earth shattering 91.3 horse stock, and at 7 psi non-intercooled put down 159.7, and the truck is 100% stock minus the turbo kit, and 84,xxx miles. It will be interesting to see what the 3.0 V-6 does.
How many miles on your '94? And is this your only vehicle?
I have an toyota 4x4 with the 3.0 in it. I think one of the crank bearings is going so Im pulling the motor and dropping in a 350 (unfortunatly not toyota) if any is interested in purchasing this 3.0 for testing please let me know. right now the motor still runs fine it just has a minor squeak(not belts) which sounds like bearings after hearing it on a amplified hearing device.

Thanks for the offer, but just an engine won't do us a whole lot of good, but how much would be asking for the engine?

sorry to get off subject but I'd like to see some of the 22re turbo's you have done, I personally have a 93 with a t04, plus maybe this could show people your work. thanks
